Just when we thought we might have to start some pagan rituals and pray to Odin, it turns out that we are only a few short days away from the return of season 5 of Vikings and we can barely contain our excitement!
As we enter the fifth season, we see that characters who survived season 4 have been through the ringer are embarking on their own personal path to power and discovering themselves. The loss of their father, friend and leader, Ragnar Lothbrok, still weighs heavily on them as the repercussions of their actions come to light. Let’s take a moment to catch up with some of our characters before the roller coaster begins.
Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick)
Coming into the new season, Lagertha’s son, Bjorn, has avenged the death of Ragnar and she is now Queen of Kattegat. She is determined to protect her people and “rule in a more intellectual way than necessarily her male counterparts.” She has been betrayed by many men (and women) and therefore her level of trust is very low. Aside from outsiders trying to overthrow her, there is still that pesky issue of Ivar and the other sons of Ragnar who want revenge for their mother’s death. The farmer’s wife and shield maiden from seasons 1 through 4 is now a major player and we eagerly wait to see how she will hold her own!
“The fans are going to expect some shockers, some crazy surprises and it’s so far one of my favorite seasons.”
Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård)
At the end of season 4, Floki has lost his beloved wife, Helga, his daughter, and his best friend. He is broken, lost and isn’t quite sure what to do with himself. With nothing to live for, he sets out on his own at the mercy of the gods. He makes a “one-man boat” and sails away with no navigational tools.
“He has this kind of awakening, he’s kind of reborn in a pagan sense.”
The Floki we see in season 5 is going to be different from what we have seen before. He has realized that how he has been in the past hasn’t helped him and he sets out to be a better person. We can only guess what the new Floki will be like!
Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig)
As the eldest of Ragnar’s sons, Bjorn struggles to lead his fractured family especially after the death of one of his brothers. He comes head to head with Ivar who feels he can also lead their people better than Bjorn. The conflict between Ivar and Bjorn and the other brothers is not something Bjorn wishes to deal with and in that respect, he is more like his father.
“What’s more important above and beyond is fulfilling his father’s dream and also exploring for himself.”
Rather than get dragged into the family’s power struggles, he decides to follow his heart and journey to the Mediterranean like he initially wanted back in season 4. We are excited to see his experiences in a new world filled with new people and uncharted territories!
Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen)
Of all of Ragnar’s sons, Ivar is perhaps the most brutal and unpredictable. He left us speechless at the end of season 4 when he let his anger overcome him and flung the ax into his brother, Sigurd. Perhaps part of him does regret that action, however, he isn’t able to stop himself.
“I think he is geniunely sad and scared of himself in a way because he lost control.”
He has spent all his life on the sidelines watching everyone else live, “He has no intensions of settling down.” This season, he uses his intellect to become a leader and strives to be more famous than his father. His battles with Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is surely going to be intense!
Though we say farewell to Ragnar in season 4, it looks like we are in for a treat as the fallout of his death creates some wonderful drama and character development for those he left behind. More battles, more drama, and more crazy adventures! Check out some additional comments for the new season below.
