Dermot Mulroney Will Return for the Final Season of ‘New Girl’

2018 will be a rough year for New Girl fans.  Next year, the series will air its 7th and final season but, it looks like at least one familiar face will be returning for the series’ final hurrah.

According to TVLine and Entertainment Weekly, Dermot Mulroney will be reprising his role as Russell “Fancyman” Shiller (aka. Jess’ ex) in the final season of New Girl.  Mulroney is said to guest-star during multiple episodes during the show’s final and abbreviated run which is expected to air sometime in 2018.

Mulroney’s character was first introduced in the first season of the series as the parent of one of Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel) students.  The two initially clashed, however, after a series of Jess-like awkward encounters, the couple soon ended up falling for each other.  Jess and Russell broke up and Russell has not been seen in the series since he returned during the season 2 episode First Date.

New Girl‘s final season will be a shortened, eight-episode run which was a decision made by Fox in order to avoid cancellation of the series.  TVLine has also reported that we may see a significant time jump during these last eight episodes but that the series will most likely show Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson) in a happy and loving relationship.  With that said, no details have been released as to what Russell’s return may mean for the happy couple but, all will be revealed when season 7 of New Girl airs in 2018.
