Amazon and Warner Bros. in “Very Early Talks” to Develop a ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series

Frodo’s journey to Mordor may soon be taking a new turn!  Amazon is in very early talks with Warner Bros. Television regarding plans to develop a television adaptation of the Lord of the Rings novels.  The news was originally reported by Variety and later confirmed by Entertainment Weekly.

Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R. Tolkien and originally published in 1954.  Peter Jackson brought the story to life in starting in 2001 with The Fellowship of the Ring.  He continued the story in 2002 with The Two Towers and finally completing the trilogy in 2003 with Return of the King.  Return of the King won the Academy Award for Best Picture as well as 10 other awards for the film.

Both Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate have been shopping the series recently and, with Amazon being in the market for new large-scale genre programming, a series such as this would be a perfect fit for the streaming platform.  Amazon has been looking for a way to duplicate the success of HBO’s Game of Thrones and this might just be the perfect way to do so.  At this time, however, representatives for both Amazon and Warner Bros. declined to comment.

What do you think of  Lord of the Rings potentially making its way to the small screen?   Do you think the development of a series version of the story is a good idea or that the books and films should be left alone?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
