‘The Walking Dead”s Khary Payton Says He Is Very Similar to King Ezekiel

When Khary Payton joined the cast of The Walking Dead, it was as one of the biggest characters in the story. King Ezekiel is a force to be reckoned with and it’s not just because of his ‘King’ status and his pet tiger Shiva. It’s the way he was born to be the hero of his own story and how he became the hero for many others as well.

He’s an actor, of sorts, and a self-proclaimed ‘king’ but it’s a role he was born to play. He’s got charisma, charm, strength, and a sense of both self and community that make him the perfect leader. He saw what the apocalypse demanded and he provided, for himself and for those around him. It’s given him the opportunity to bring people under his wing and to give them a chance at new life.

When we had the chance to talk to Khary this weekend, a few important questions came up. From his favorite character to what he thinks Ezekiel’s ship name with Carol would be, we found out some insight into the character we love so much from the guy who brings him to life.

Check out our whole interview with Khary below!

Of course, that ship name was a pressing question. Now we’ve got it sorted. Khary says the ship name for Carol and Ezekiel would be Cezekiel because it totally rolls off the tongue. He tried a few ways of combining the names, but Cezekiel totally works best. Now, we’re just waiting for that ship to take sail.

We wanted to know who Khary’s favorite character was as well. He’s definitely got more than one, but there was something about Glenn that  choose because they’re all so good. His new favorite character is Jerry but he also loves Carol and Morgan who he gets to work with so much. He says they’re all so awesome he really feels lucky to be part of the cast.

While The Walking Dead is a perfect fit for Khary, we wondered what else he may dream of becoming as an actor.

In terms of a dream role for Khary, Mr. M – in a play called My Children My Africa which is a play he was cast in during college.

Last, fans asked if he was nervous when he jumped into The Walking Dead, and he said he was just too busy to be nervous. He had too much to do, especially because his first episode was really Ezekiel’s episode.

Every episode since his big debut on the show has been impactful, and we have to credit him for a large part of what The Walking Dead is becoming. Especially after watching tonight’s episode.

Keep up with King Ezekiel and The Walking Dead Sunday’s on AMC.
