‘Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Saved By The House of Mouse

In what may come as a surprise to fans of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC was thinking of cancelling the series after its four-season run due to the roller-coaster ratings the show has seen since its inception. However, according to Variety, a mandate came down from Disney, which owns ABC to renew AOS for a fifth season.

It appears ABC wanted to shift focus from the fledgling series to its new, critically panned darling Inhumans. Ever since opening in IMAX theaters for a very limited one week run (originally slated for two weeks), Inhumans has been ripped apart by fans and critics alike, some even going as far as to call it the worst thing Marvel has done in decades.

With production costs nearly paid for thanks to the IMAX run, Inhumans doesn’t even have to perform well for ABC to be happy. The show will air its pilot episode Friday, September 29.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in January 2018, just after Inhumans ends its first season, with a 22 episode run that will have no breaks in-between episodes. It also moves from Tuesdays to Fridays.
