There May Be a ‘Hocus Pocus’ TV Movie in the Works!
Ever since the original film was released in 1993, there have been rumors and murmurings of Hocus Pocus 2 possibly being in the works. As it turns out, we may be getting that long-awaited sequel soon.
In a recent interview filmmaker/writer Mick Garris spoke with Forbes regarding the film’s cult following and its increasing popularity over the last several years. Garris teased the fact that a made-for-TV sequel is in development though he is not directly involved. Garris said:
“There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel it might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead.”
How exciting is that? A Hocus Pocus TV movie is moving ahead! The original film was released by Disney in 1993 and has become a beloved Halloween classic. The film told the story of three witch sisters, Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) Sanderson who were resurrected after 300 years. The witches seek to take over Salem, Massachusetts using their dark magic and specifically to capture the souls of children. When Max (Ormi Katz), his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and Allison (Vinessa Shaw) challenge the truth of an urban legend, the three kids must do everything they can to stop the Sanderson sisters.
Of course, it sounds like this production is in the very, VERY early stages so we do not have much more information regarding the film. A new report from Deadline has confirmed that, in fact, a TV re-imagining of the film is in the works. The new film will be written by Scarlett Lacey (The Royals) and will feature a brand new cast and director. Regardless, it would be great to see the Sanderson Sisters come to life once again.
Garris enjoys the fact that the first film has become such a classic and, in some cases, it’s almost like a Halloween tradition passed down from generation to generation. Of the film’s popularity, Garris said:
“Now it has become an annual thing at the El Capitan on Hollywood Boulevard and the show is sold out. went there last year and one of the ushers actually recognized me and gave me a tour of the theater. Generation after generation, it’s kind of remarkable and fantastic to have something brought to the screen like that and to have it embraced generation after generation. Everybody I meet, it’s either their daughters or their own favorite movie and it’s incredibly exciting.”
