WATCH: Sonequa Martin-Green Shares Her Emotional Insight as to Why ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is so Meaningful

On Sunday night, for the first time in nearly a decade, a brand new Star Trek series will begin taking audiences on a journey into outer space.  Star Trek: Discovery promises to take the franchise to new intergalactic heights while staying true to the values which the series has always embodied.  That’s why to series star Sonequa Martin-Green, this is much more than just another role or another job.

Martin-Green stopped by The Talk recently to promote the new series.  During her interview, she shared a never-before-seen video clip (taken by her husband Kenric Green) of the moment she learned she had gotten the role on Star Trek: Discovery.  In the brief clip, Martin-Green is overcome with excitement, emotions and, dare we say a little bit of disbelief as she realizes exactly what taking on this role will mean.  Not only is the new series upholding the Star Trek legacy of diversity and acceptance but, this role makes her the first black woman Starfleet officer, ever!

When asked how it feels to be part of the legacy, Martin-Green’s passion for this series takes over.  She emotionally highlights exactly why this series is so important by saying:

“I think about what it means to see ourselves.  I think about our young people watching.  I think about the legacy of Star Trek itself and how the universality is the spirit of it and how we are continuing with that, not even just with me. We also have the first Asian female captain. We also have the first female captain with a female first officer. We have a positive relationship there. And we have the first openly gay officer as well.  And I feel like where we are right now with so much division and separatism and superiority and inferiority, I just think that it is for a time, like this, right now.  I think it means a lot to be able to see a picture of that Utopian future, where we can be together and it doesn’t matter what we look like and really respect each other and embrace each other.  I think to be able to see that means everything.”
