Dan Fogelman says ‘This Is Us’ Season 2 Premiere is “Heavy”

The season 2 premiere of This Is Us is less than a week away and fans are trying to prepare themselves for the heartache and massive amount of tears that will undoubtedly be shed on September 26th.

Especially because the series returns after the big fight between Jack and Rebecca, where they both said things they didn’t mean – or things they might have meant, but not in the right context – not with the right thought and consideration beforehand.

Now, they’re forced to face what happens next, and what to tell their children, and what to tell one another about the time they must spend apart if they want a chance at the future they deserve. Dan Fogelman told EW that the first episode back is scarring.

It’s scarring. I mean, they’ve said stuff they’ve never said. They’ve said stuff in the heat of the moment that clearly, they felt for a while. I think it takes a while to buy it back. The first episode is all about the ramifications of those things that have been said, and the regret.

The episode will also focus on the ‘big 3’ in their current lives, where they’re each dealing with a big change. Randall wants to adopt a child, Kevin is filming a movie in LA, and Kate is exploring a singing career – they’ll need each other now more than ever as they embark on the next chapters in their lives.

Fogelman also said that the season will be powerful, even the lighter stuff. It’ll be heavy and it’ll be hard to watch at times, but there will be an intensity in the good and the bad that draw fans in even deeper than before.

Even the uplifting, sweet, lighter stuff feels powerful. The Rebecca-Jack story at the ending of the episode is very intense. And in a different way, Randall and Beth’s [Susan Kelechi Watson] story has got a giant, exciting scope to it as they’re figuring out what they’re going to do with this quest he is on to adopt. It moves really quickly. It’s because now you know these characters and you feel like you’ve been away from them for a while, so you want to just suck in all this time with them. But we’ve only got 40 minutes and we’ve got eight characters you want to catch up to, so it flies — in a good way.
