George R.R. Martin’s ‘Nightflyers’ ordered to series at SYFY

George R.R. Martin’s sci-fi novella Nightflyers has been ordered to series over at SYFY. The network had ordered a pilot for the show in June. Originally published by the magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact, the book was expanded upon at the request of Martin’s editor, and in 1981 it was published by Dell Publishing.

The story focuses on a group of scientists who travel on a mission to the edge of the solar system aboard The Nightflyer to make contact with an alien race. Eventually the crew find themselves trapped by a madman who intends to kill them all.

A film of the novella was released on October 23, 1987 and was concerned with a group of scientists sent on a mission to find a mysterious alien race, but the ship’s computer seeks to do them harm. The film starred Catherine Mary Stewart, Michael Praed and John Standing. The upcoming television series will be based on the film.
