SDCC: The Strain – The Final Panel

When The Strain premiered on FX in 2014, it brought with it a different type of killer virus and a new genre of horror television When the head of the CDC’s New York-based Canary Project, Dr. Ephraim, was called to investigate an airplane that landed with all of its passengers dead – a viral outbreak is discovered.

However, it was no normal virus. Instead, it had similarities to an ancient vampirism strain and of course, it quickly began to spread. Dr. Goodweather was forced to fight to save humanity. This is what the last three seasons of the series have focused upon, and season 4 will undoubtedly do the same. However, unlike seasons past – season 4 is where The Strain will take its final bow.

Just days ago, Cinema Blend posted an article with a quote in it from Cas Anvar that promises an incredible final season for the series.

All I’m going to tell you is this is the final season of The Strain, and when you go into it knowing that it’s the final season, and the writers are writing it as the final season, all bets are off. All bets are off because we know that it’s going to conclude, so they can tell the best, most exciting story they can. And they don’t have to worry about any consequences.’

At SDCC, the series had its final panel and it was a momentous occasion.

Carlton Cuse, Chuck Hogan, Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Kevin Durand, Ruta Gedmintas, Miguel Gomez, Richard Sammel, and Max Charles were at the final SDCC panel for the series today.

Carlton Cuse said that no one is safe, but that’s what makes the series so interesting. He also says that there will be a definitive ending for each character – but it’s not guaranteed to be happy.

‘No one is safe. Not everyone survives. The fun thing of the show is, we get to play out the end of that narrative. You’ll find it cool and surprising.’

Corey Stoll touched on the fact that the television series found a way to keep true to the spirit of the books without ending up with the exact same storyline, especially for the last episode.

The events of the last episode are so well done. For people who have read the book and know how it ends, and for new people, they kept it true to the spirit of the show and the books without the same things happening.

The cast also spoke about how straying from the book trilogy was a smart move for television – it allowed them to take different paths and to watch relationships blossom and come to life in a different way.

All in all, the takeaway from the panel reassured long standing fans that the series will be done justice in its final episodes and invited newer fans to engage in the show before its time runs out. However, with a series like The Strain, the sun will never truly set.
