Throwback Thursday: ‘Independence Day’ (1996)

20th Century Fox

Independence Day is around the corner, and so for today’s Throwback Thursday, we are taking it back to the original Independence Day movie which starred Will Smith as Captain Steven Hiller and Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson.  The film was released in 1996 and centers around an alien invasion of epic proportions that spans the globe.

The non-stop adventure follows a group of individuals who band together to defend not just their people, but the world. Bill Pullman plays President Thomas J. Whitmore, the fearless leader who attempts to encourage and give hope to those around him. Other notable characters are Russell Casse (Randy Quaid), First Lady Marilyn Whitmore (Mary McDonnell), Julius Levinson (Judd Hirsch), Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox), and Constance Spano (Margaret Colin).

Initially the appearance of the spaceships on July 2 bring excitement to those who have believed in otherworldly beings; however, that quickly dissipates as they realize that the extraterrestrials are not friendly visitors. Instead, their intentions are to destroy the earth and every living thing on the planet.

Using what David Levinson knows about science and technology, he and the others devise a plan to bring the aliens down. Captain Hiller leads the fighter pilots to carry out the plan; along with the help of Russell Casse, a quirky former pilot. The survivors at Area 51 all embrace themselves for an epic battle, as Pullman delivers a moving speech for those ready to fight for the human race.
