E3 2017 Highlights For Day 1 – EA

Another year, another E3. And this year’s E3 was actually the first to kick things off, an honor usually reserved for Microsoft. Though being the first to display at E3 is a harrowing feat. Any big announcements can quickly be overshadowed while any failures can be mocked for days to come – remember when Microsoft tired to end Game Sharing and were torn to shreds?

So how did EA do? Knowing the company, we can bet there’d be a lot of Sports Games and Star Wars Battlefront; but were they any good? Was there anything new?

Let’s sum up the Highlights of E3 2017 – Day 1: Electronic Arts!

Star Wars: Battlefront 2

When EA first announced Star Wars: Battlefront in 2015, many hoped it’d be a return to stellar battles like the old PS2 series. Sadly, this was not the case as the series charged people an arm and a leg for necessary DLCs and patches. Add in plenty of other bugs and oversights and it was a game that seemed nothing more than a cash grab. Battlefront 2 however aims to change all that and judging by the trailer, it looks like this might actually be the game we were waiting for.

Unlike the first game, Battlefront 2 will have a single-player campaign, which takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Though the entire game will span much more than that. In fact, every Star Wars era will be reflected making this game have up to three times as much content as the original. Additionally, all DLC and upgrades will be free. No paying the price of the game for content that should have been there on release day. Add in a bunch of more vehicles, customization options and character classes, and this actually looks like a return to Star Wars: Battlefront glory!

A Required Co-Op Game – A Way Out:

The boldest reveal from EA’s conference was a new title called A Way Out, which is described as a “story-driven co-op game”. Though the most unique aspect of this game is how it can ONLY be played in Co-Op/ split screen. Considering games sometimes get a lot of heat for having a lackluster single player experience, it’ll be interesting to see how this game does. Will everyone enjoy it? No, but it could be an exciting niche game for those who love Co-Op play.

The Sports Staples – Madden 1, Fifa 18, & NBA Live 18:

Of course, it’s EA so each of their yearly sports games were revealed. Though the most interesting aspects were how Madden and Fifa will both get a story mode! Additionally, Fifa 18 will allow import of Fifa 17 characters as well as your personality and past trophies. I’ve never been one for sports game, but given sports games actual story modes is an interesting change. Let’s see if it pays off!

Battlefield “In The Name Of The Tsar” Expansion:

As for the widely popular Battlefield game, there won’t be a sequel or anything just yet, but there will be a big expansion coming up titled “In The Name Of The Tsar” which will follow the Eastern front (Russia) during World War 1. There will be six new maps as well as a new competitive mode, but more details are planned to be unveiled in August at Gamescom. Though if you can’t wait for all that, the game will also be getting two night maps sometime this summer.

Teaser Trailer For New IP – Anthem

The most exciting (and familiar) reveal of the Press Conference was a short teaser of a new IP from Bioware called Anthem. Very few – if any – details were given and we’ll learn more tomorrow at the Microsoft Press Conference, but judging by the teaser it looms like Fallout 4 mixed with Destiny – at least story wise. Suits of armor and a wall defending the last city against monsters outside it? It all seemed like a mix of other games, but let’s wait for some game footage and more details. Mixing successful properties isn’t a bad thing; but let’s hope this series takes the best of those series rather than just being a shallow experience.
