On Tuesday night, at the premiere of The Mummy, Tom Cruise spoke to PEOPLE about his character in the film and what he brings to the table. He also spoke about how this film is the first in the new Dark Universe world and in that enviornment, you have to have what Tom calls ‘grey area characters’.

He’s kind of naughty, Nick, a little bit. He’s somebody who’s a thief, an interesting character. We follow him as he takes us through this new world of gods and monsters in the new Dark Universe world and with this Dark Universe, you have these gray area characters.

He also says that Nick is ‘questionable, but he’s very charming and funny.’

He also went on to say that he loves playing characters like Nick because the thing he loves to do most is to entertain. He loves being able to keep an audience happy because he’s a huge fan of movies himself. He knows what he wants as a viewer and he takes that into consideration as an actor.

I just love these characters because I want to entertain, that’s what I do. I love movies, I’m a big fan of films, and I just love using all my abilities to entertain an audience.

You can also tell that Tom wants to be a fan of his own films too. Not in a way that makes him self absorbed, but in a way that makes him proud of the work that he does and happy to continue striving to do better.

And whatever kind of genre I’m in, I apply the same mentality to my dramas and comedies that I do to films on this scale. I’m always thinking of, ‘I want a great story.’ I just want to be entertained!

We love seeing Tom in films and we’re excited to see how he takes on the role of Nick, especially as it’s the first film in the Monster Universe world. The film drops on June 9th, so not only will we be seeing The Mummy and the incredible work put into this film, we’ll see the door open into the new universe.

Are you excited for Universal’s Dark Universe? When do you plan on seeing The Mummy? Let us know.
