Don Cheadle on ‘women only’ Wonder Woman Screenings

UPDATE: We received the following statement from Alamo Drafthouse:

“Obviously, Alamo Drafthouse recognizes ‘Wonder Woman’ is a film for all audiences, but our special women-only screenings may have created confusion – we want everybody to see this film.” – Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Here at Fan Fest, we are pretty big fans of Don Cheadle. It’s sort of a give in, if you’re a Marvel fan, that Don is an actor you have an affinity towards. If you haven’t been keeping up with social media, you may have missed it, but if you have – we’re sure that, like us, you became an even bigger fan of his over the last few days.

When a movie theater decided to hold women-only screenings of Wonder Woman, the internet erupted in a mix of both love and disdain for the idea. The theater, The Alamo in Austin received a lot of support but also a lot of backlash and while some local residents spoke out on the theater’s behalf, as well as an audience on Twitter. One person who defended the theater was Don himself and his replies were fantastic.

If you look at his Twitter account, you’ll see him championing for the idea of the women-only screenings but also for women in general. We picked a few of our favorite responses to share with you here.

He even went to point out that the argument most people were using is one that doesn’t make sense because it already happens every day. He calls sexism institutional, and he’s right.

He also retweeted a message that a Twitter user posted saying that in addition to the women-only screenings, the price of tickets should only be 85% of the usual ticket price to reflect the wage gap and gender earning disparity.

Don has continued to speak out for the last few days on other social issues that need awareness now more than ever. We’re big fans of Don for his talent and what he brings to entertainment but also because of the way he uses his platform to speak up.
