NBC Orders Retta and Mae Whitman Dramedy to Series
NBC has begun to add new series to its 2017-18 schedule, beginning with the dramedy Good Girls, from Scandal executive producer Jenna Bans.
Starring Retta (Parks and Recreation) and Mae Whitman (Parenthood), the series – described as Thelma and Louise meets Breaking Bad – follows three struggling suburban moms, who decide to rob a local supermarket with a toy gun. But when one of them is spotted by the store’s manager, and the haul is more than they bargained for, they realize that getting away with it will be much harder than expected. Also starring are Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewitt, Izzy Stannard, and Matthew Lillard. The role of Beth, played by Kathleen Rose Perkins in the pilot, is currently being recast.
NBC also picked up the “virtual-reality” drama Reverie earlier today. Starring Sarah Shahi and Dennis Haysbert, the thriller follows Mara Kint (Shahi), a former hostage negotiator and expert on human behavior who became a college professor after facing an unimaginable tragedy. But when she’s brought in to save people who have lost themselves in a highly advanced virtual-reality program in which you can literally live your dreams, “she finds that in saving others, she may have actually discovered a way to save herself.” The cast also includes Sendhil Ramamurthy, Jessica Lu, and Kathryn Morris.
