‘Arrow’: We MIGHT Lose People in Epic Finale, According to EP

In a recent interview with EW, when EP Wendy Mericle was asked the question ‘Will there be a death in the season finale’ she responded with:

‘ We might lose some people.’

Wendy Mericle teased the upcoming ‘explosive’ Season 5 finale, stating that his Season Finale was quite different from the others because this one is very personal to Oliver.

I would say that it’s very much in the same vein as what we’ve been doing so far this season. The ending is going to be very personal to Oliver. It is going to be the showdown between him and Adrian Chase that we’ve all been waiting for. We’re very excited about it because I think Josh and Stephen have just brought this amazing, cool dynamic to those two roles. Not surprisingly, Adrian is going to continue to be several steps ahead of Oliver, but I think Oliver has got his number. So the finale will be full of some pretty big surprises. I think Oliver’s finally going to find a way to do what he’s been trying to do all season and put the past behind him.

In the same interview, Mericle also teased how this battle is going to be quite different than the others. This leaves me wondering what could they possibly have in store for us. We’ve seen cities burn down, get buried and face a biohazard epidemic; what could possibly be left for this final show down?

There will absolutely be fisticuffs. In surprising ways, a lot of the battle will be done in ways that we’ve never done on the show before, which we’re very excited about. But emotionally, Chase has been trying to prove to the world and to Oliver that he is not a hero, he’s a killer. He’s going to pull out one final, big whammo at the end that is going to really leave Oliver reeling and raise a lot of questions. I think Oliver is going to come down on the right side of that question, but not without a lot of risk and a lot of potential heartache.

One would wonder what this ‘big whammo’ could possibly be? In the closing minutes of ‘Underneath’, we saw Adrian Chase confront Oliver’s son William. Call me crazy, but I feel as though the big ‘whammo’ may have something to do with him. Although Oliver may not have been a part of William’s life at all, there is no extent Oliver would not go to for his son.
Which also makes me wonder, if Chase tells William that his father is the Green Arrow, how will William react? In Season 4, William told his mom he wanted a Green Arrow action figure after he saved him from Damien Darhk. However, all of Star City views the Green Arrow as a vicious killer once more. Essentially, Chase has made Green Arrow public enemy No. 1. Could Oliver come back from this?

That’s one of the things we wanted to do was bring him to his lowest point this year. He’s going to have to, in some ways, let go of all of this, and let go of the past. Really the answer to that question will be in the premiere of season 6, which is how is he going to start rebuilding and what is his new legacy going to look like? He’s going to have to start rebuilding, because Chase has left pretty much everything in tatters.

Something that I always find myself looking forward to in any television series that I watch, is the finale episode. Arrow has always had a way to make their finale’s pretty intense and action packed, and EP Wendy Mericle even stated that this finale will be ‘explosive’. Also, the finale will focus on Oliver’s family:

There’s no way to talk about the end of these five chapters without evoking the Queen family in some way, shape, or form, and really there’s no way in the flashback to sync up with the pilot, which is what we’re going to be doing, without evoking them as well. As for the finale, it’s going to be a big kaboom. That’s as far as I’ll go with that one.

A big ‘kaboom’, hmm? I wonder if she means that literally. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised. Super Villains really do love their explosions.

Arrow will air on Wednesday, May 10 at 8PM/EST on The CW.
