Katy Perry Talks New Album and Embracing who she Really Is

There comes a time in everyone’s life where the question exists: ‘Is this the time – or is there an opportunity – to reinvent me?‘ For some, that answer is a simple yes and the process is an easy change. For others, no reinvention is necessary, and change happens in small doses; but for others, there is a time and place for a reinvention, and Katy Perry is one of those individuals.

In 2013, Katy Perry released her last album, Prism. After the album’s release she toured it, even performed at The Super Bowl, but then she needed to take some time away and get back to what makes her who she truly is. She took some time off and got out of a place of being ‘too much’.

During that time, Katy began working on writing new music, and she seems so happy with what she’s put together for her new album set to be released soon. Katy spoke with EW recently about the process of making this album, and how it’s different than her previous music.

The energy is just totally different, it’s not thirsty or desperate or clingy. It’s a really beautiful kind of Zen-like feeling place. I just went there to gather myself and I started making a record in June of last year.’

It’s really quite brave. Sonically, it’s fun and dancey and dark and light. It’s all of these things. It definitely is a change.’

Katy talked about how her new sound has a lot to do with growth, both as she got older and as she got back to the center of who she is. She says she ‘built up’ Katy Perry for so long, and she still embraces Katy, but she’s also Katheryn Hudson and that’s a side of her that she’s embracing as well.

I left my 20s and I’ve gone to my 30s. I’ve embraced. I’ve surrendered. I’ve healed some of my issues with my family, with my relationships. Today I’m sober but I don’t know about tomorrow! One day at a time, right? It’s all kind of beautiful. I built up Katy Perry and she was so fun. And I still am Katy Perry and I love her so much but, at the core, I’m Katheryn Hudson and I think that’s being revealed as I embrace who I really am.

For this upcoming album, Katy took 40 songs down to 15, and while it doesn’t have an official title yet – or if it does, it’s not totally public, it’s a new look into who she’s become and who she wants to continue becoming. Fans have heard some of that in her songs, ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ and ‘Bon Appetit’, two songs that are different in sound but showcase her talent incredibly.

While we wait to hear what else Katy has in store for us, this exchange with EW was a nice pallet cleanser, now we can listen to her new songs with the knowledge that we’re seeing a new side of Katy, and we’re excited to see what happens next.
