‘Hellboy’ Creator Announces R-Rated Reboot

Mike Mignola, Hellboy creator, has just announced that he is planning on producing a R-Rated reboot of the Hellboy franchise. The film will feature David Harbour (Stranger Things). The creator made the announcement via Facebook Monday evening. It was also revealed that The Decent and Game of Thrones director, Neil Marshall is on board to direct the remake.

It has also been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that the production company Millenium was in negotiations for the reboot of the film. As of this point, the working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. There are rumors that the screenplay is completed and was written by Mignola, Christopher Golden and Andrew Crosby.

It also stated in THR article that original director Guillermo del Toro and original star Ron Perlman would not be involved in the reboot project at all. Apparently, producers were not able to reach a compromise regarding the film’s budget with del Toro.

Hellboy was created in 1993 by Mignola. It follows a demon that is summoned to Earth during a Nazi cult ceremony during the time of WWII. He eventually becomes a defender of the Earth.

The first film in the Hellboy franchise was released in 2004 and starred Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones with a sequel, The Golden Army to follow in 2008. A third film was never made because Perlman and del Toro could not get it off the ground.

The Hellboy comic series officially ended in 2016.
