‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Gets Personal in Emotional Letter to Fans

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hasn’t even made it through its opening weekend yet and, already, the film is dominating at the box office.  As quite possibly the most highly-anticipated film release of 2017, its a wonder what the cast, crew and creators of the film must be thinking at this very moment.  Are they celebrating between press junkets or overwhelmed with the immediate success of the film?  It’s not often that you get insight into what’s really going on in the head of Hollywood celebs but, director James Gunn has made it very clear how he’s feeling and what’s currently going through his mind.

In an emotional and heart-felt Facebook post, Gunn penned a reflective letter to the fans, honoring their loyalty and explaining exactly what his career, specifically Guardians of the Galaxy, has meant to him.  From feeling alone and potentially suicidal early on in his life to finding a sanctuary and safe place, in popular entertainment, Gunn does not hold anything back in the lengthy post.

Gunn’s concluding statements of his posts are what really hit home why he continues to do what he does and how appreciative he is of the love and support he’s received from fans all over the world:

“I work because I like telling stories. I work because I love the relationships I have with my collaborators. And I do it because I like connecting with people, and the easiest way I know how to do that is through filmmaking. I do it so that some kid in Thailand, or England, or Colombia, or Brazil, or Japan, or Russia, or anywhere, can hear the frequency of his or her own heart bouncing back off the Guardians.

They’re a group of heartbroken misfits whose lives have been bereft of tenderness and connection and who have a nearly impossible time trusting themselves or others. But they’re learning, one step at a time.

They are me. They are you. We are Groot.

And no matter how much world leaders are telling you we aren’t in this together, we are. You are not alone.

Thank you so much, my Facebook friends, for supporting me over the past two and a half years, and thank you for all the messages letting us know we’ve keyed into the frequency of your hearts. I love you all, and I’ll continue being here with you over the next three years as we create Vol. 3.”
