Jude Law Cast As Young Dumbledore In Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel
Jude Law is set to enter the wizarding world after it was announced today that he has been cast as a young Dumbledore in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The Sherlock Holmes actor will follow in the footsteps of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon who both portrayed an older version of J.K Rowling’s famous character in the Harry Potter series.
David Yates will be returning to direct the follow-up to last year’s box office hit and Potter spin-off, which grossed over $800m worldwide. The unnamed Fantastic Beasts sequel is reported to be released Nov. 16, 2018.
Whilst Rowling uses her magic to write the second screenplay, the first film’s lead stars – Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol – will be polishing their wands for their return to the franchise; along with Dan Fogler who portrayed no-maj, Jacob.
Law’s casting will see him opposite Johnny Depp, who towards the end of the first film was revealed to be the ill-famed Gellert Grindelwald. It is known that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were childhood friends who eventually grew apart. Grindelwald then appeared to have grown up to be the most notorious dark wizard to have lived before Voldemort.
“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” Yates said in a statement.
“I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”
Previously, Rowling has stated that Dumbledore was once in love with Grindelwald, which thus added to his shock of seeing what he had become.
“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a trouble man. We’ll see him at that formative period of his life,” said Rowling on the sequel.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ‘2’ begins filming this summer.
