Sony buys rights to ‘My Favorite Thing Is Monsters’

If you haven’t heard of Emil Ferris’s gargantuan graphic novel, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, you will soon enough because either:

A) You’re reading this article right now, thus, making yourself aware of the mystery/horror/mind-blowing book before it becomes a movie.

B) When the movie inevitably graces silver screens, you’ll probably be drawn to it, subsequently learning it was based on a hugely-popular graphic novel before it was ever translated to screen.

That’s right. Sony Pictures has officially outbid four other production companies for the rights to the highly-acclaimed  (seriously, there’s a lot of love for this book, even outside the sphere of comics. That’s kind of a big deal, especially for a title that’s considered “indie.”) According to Deadline, Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant (the EPs of both comedic horror film Fear, Inc. and Zedd: True Colors, the documentary following popular musician/DJ/model/record producer/oh my God, is there anything he doesn’t do? Zedd) are going to be the executive producers, and Palak Patel will be overseeing for Columbia pictures.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is written as the graphic diary of 10-year-old, monster-obsessed Karen Reyes. Ostracised by the kids at school and coming to terms with her sexuality (in the 1960s in Chicago, a time and place that’s less than inclusive) , Karen enthusiastically believes herself a monster  When her neighbour, a Holocaust survivor, is murdered, Karen decides to do some digging— unearthing a world of dark (sometimes sickening) secrets. This book is not for the faint of heart, and it’s definitely not okay to read with children, despite the protagonist being a kid herself.  Dark, stomach-curling but also profound and infused with humour, Ferris’s graphic novel deserves all the acclaim it’s getting. But don’t take my word for it— pick it up for yourself here (volume 2 is available for preorder at the bottom of the linked page!).
