For this week’s throwback Thursday, we are taking it to a ‘happy’ place, where we create ‘happy’ things on a ‘happy’ little canvas with none other than Bob Ross. His thirty-minute television show, The Joy of Painting, ran from 1983 to 1994 and gave us great artwork from an iconic painter.
He would start each show with a blank canvas and by the end; there would be a magnificent painting. It was almost magical how he painted so effortlessly! Throughout his process, he would talk to viewers, providing instructions with each stroke and encouraging them to be creative. One of my favorite quotes from him was, “We don’t make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.”
I will not deny trying to imitate Ross in my art classes. I could never quite get the mountains to look exactly like his or the clouds to look as fluffy, but I always felt content because I could hear that gentle voice of his say, “You can do anything you want to do. This is your world.” His soothing zen-like tone also added some wisdom in between the painting lessons, “Gotta give him a friend. Like I always say, ‘Everyone needs a friend.'”
There are plenty of YouTube videos where you can catch old episodes. Fans can also catch collections on Netflix or stream episodes on Amazon Prime. One video that caught my eye was a catchy PBS icons remix created by PBS Digital Studios. Watch the remix below!
If you are looking to catch a full episode, pull up your very own canvas and follow along to his Mystic Mountain episode below! We all could use someone like Bob Ross in our lives!
