Listen To This Year’s Oscar Nominees for ‘Best Original Song’

5 new contenders will be battling it out at the Oscars on February 26th to join the company of some wonderful music in the Best Original Song category. Past winners include “Let It Go” (Frozen), “Glory” (Selma), “My Heart Will Go On” (Titanic), “Take My Breath Away” (Top Gun), “Moon River” (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and many more!

 While it has not been confirmed whether any of the songs will be performed as they have in years past you can listen to them right here and make your predictions!

Warning: Some of these catchy tunes may end up stuck in your head all day long.

“Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from La La Land

One of the two songs nominated from La La Land, Audition (The Fools Who Dream) is performed by Emma Stone with music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. In an interview with Variety, Hurwitz had this to say about the song, “[The song is] probably my favorite song in the movie. Compositionally, I’m more proud of that than any other song. Lyrically, it speaks to me quite a bit as a creative person in L.A. […] And it came from a very pure place.”

 “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls

Performed by Justin Timberlake with music and lyrics written by Max Martin, Shellback, & Timberlake, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” took the radio by storm. It was the best-selling song of 2016, selling 2.49 million in the US . Take a listen and try not to tap your foot along to beat that rang in the finale of Trolls. 

“City of Stars” from La La Land

Probably the most recognizable song from the movie for those who both have and haven’t see it alike, “City of Stars” is the top contender for the category having already won the Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Award.  The song is heard in the official trailer as well as throughout the film.It is performed once by Ryan Gosling and once later as a duet between Gosling and Stone.

 “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story

This is the only nomination for the documentary film Jim: The James Foley Story. It’s a ballad performed by The Police front man Sting and was written to honor James Foley, the american journalist who was killed in 2014 by ISIS. Music and Lyrics were written by Sting and J. Ralph. It is a hauntingly beautiful piece and is well worth a listen.

“How Far I’ll Go” from Moana

Lin-Manuel Miranda continues to dominate the musical scene. The Hamilton creator wrote the music and lyrics for the powerful Disney anthem performed by Auli’i Cravalho. Should “How Far I’ll Go” win the Oscar, Miranda will be the youngest person to ever win the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Watch the clip below then head out to the theaters for the uplifting movie about  a young girl’s journey to break a terrible curse placed upon her island.
