COLONY recap of S2E2 “Somewhere Out There”

Colony brought the heat tonight on all fronts.  There were new characters, new storylines , expanded plots and plot twists.  I cannot believe the amount of content that was covered in one time slot! So let’s get to it.

Episode “Somewhere Out There” started with a flashback to 1969. A smart group of people were listening to and analyzing some audible communication from an unknown entity. It certainly sounded alien-like.  The experts cannot interpret the message but think they should send a response.

Did they send a response?  Did this communication spark a relationship with the hosts that would one day result in Arrival Day? Hmmm….

We then return to present day where we follow storylines in three distinct geographical areas — the Santa Monica bloc, Los Angeles bloc, and a labor camp outside the wall.

Santa Monica Bloc

Will has found Devon at her home in Santa Monica. He reaches out to her for help with his stab wound.  She stitches him up and they discuss the nature of the Santa Monica Bloc. We learn that there were not enough Red Hats to maintain order and that warlords took over the Flats.  The Red Hats have retreated to the Green Zone and the colonists are left to fend for themselves, making trades and living under the thumb of these warlords.

Devon probes for information from Will as well asking why he is there. She is disappointed that Will did not come to her for help earlier as he has been in Santa Monica for about two weeks. He explains that Charlie got stuck in Santa Monica on the other side of the wall from the rest of the Bowman family. He shares that he believes Charlie is working for someone named Solomon.

Devon knows this name and tells Will she can help him get a meeting with Solomon. He just needs to help her first. Devon is basically surviving by functioning as a bounty hunter in the Bloc.  The partners capture a woman and take her to a man who has people in cages. The woman is also placed in a cage. Devon is paid and they now have a way to pay for a meeting with Solomon.

Will proposes that Solomon trade Charlie for Will’s transit pass.  Solomon agrees but also warns Will that Charlie may not want to go with his dad.  Solomon describes how Charlie has changed, how he had to break him. Solomon gives Will Charlie’s location.

Will finds Charlie but there is not an immediate happy reunion.  Charlie is hesitant as he sees Solomon looming in the background. Devon, Will, and Charlie return to Devon’s home.

That evening Will inquires about rumblings he heard about the month closing and meeting a quota, a quota of humans. Devon says there is a rumored agreement between the Occupation and the warlords. If the warlords regularly turn over a quota of humans to go to the Factory, presumably, the Occupation will leave them alone.

The next morning Will hears shouting.  Devon has Charlie restrained outside after he tries to steal from her and run away. Will does not understand why Charlie does not want to return to Los Angeles with him.

We learn that Charlie was put on a chain among other punishments. The chain resulted in terrible scars around his ankles. Charlie blurts out that Solomon says he will hurt him, his friends, and his family if he does not stay with Solomon.

That is Will’s breaking point.  Will tells Devon to watch Charlie and he storms out. He arrives at Solomon’s den armed and ready.  He powers his way like a beast through multiple levels of security to reach Solomon. The two fight to the death. Solomon becomes a fatal victim of Will’s rage and vengeance. No more threat of Solomon.

Authority Labor Camp and Distribution Center

Bram barely escapes a direct route to the Factory with the help of Nolan Burgess making some calls. Bram and his teacher are on a bus, but where is it going?

The bus riders are lined up against a while and questioned about their past work experience. After Bram’s teacher is tossed out after revealing that he was a teacher, Bram lies and says he is 20 years old and has worked construction. Bram’s quick thinking earns him a ticket to the Labor Camp and Distribution Center outside the wall.  But, hey, at least it’s not the Factory.

New character Sgt. Jenkins played by Mac Brandt is a no-nonsense soldier with a whip in hand and no patience for slow pokes and thieves at the labor camp/distribution center.

Bram befriends a mystery girl played by Jessica Parker Kennedy.  She invites him to sit and eat with her group. Jenkins arrives to the mess hall with two Red Hats and they extract a young worker who has stolen a screwdriver.

Then we here a voice of disbelief “You wanted [correction] You’re willing to go to the Factory for a screwdriver?” It’s none other than Alan Snyder, former Proxy and current manager (we assume) of the labor camp. Bram and Snyder meet eyes and we all squeal with delight hoping Snyder can be the hero and get Bram out. But we will have to wait and see!

Los Angeles Bloc

Back in Los Angeles Katie learns that Bram has been transferred out of the prison.  She panics and pleas with Maddie to get Nolan to make sure Bram does not go to the Factory.

Also on hand at Maddie’s mansion in the Green Zone is creepy tutor Lindsay working with Gracie and Hudson. Katie and Lindsay share a few icy remarks, but I suspect Katie has very little, if any, leverage anymore about the tutoring arrangement.

Privately, Nolan shares with Maddie that they must be careful about the number of favors they request because there are only so many and loyalties could be questioned.

When Katie learns the “good news” that Bram was not sent to the Factory but rather stationed at the labor camp, she is not satisfied.  She goes directly to Nolan without Maddie’s involvement and asks what else he can do.  When Maddie finds out she is engraged.

Maddie lectures Katie accusing her of being selfish and suggests that Katie’s family is torn apart because of her own impulsive behaviors.

Later, Nolan is very eager for Maddie to be inducted into “The Greatest Day” movement. At the ceremony, Maddie is sworn to secrecy about the inner workings of this “select group”.  She takes an oath to not share these secrets with anyone, including friends or family, outside the circle. Failure to keep these secrets would result in retribution, not only for Maddie but those she loves as well.

(Wait a minute?  That sounds a lot like Solomon lording over Charlie with threats of harm to his friends and family.)

After taking her oath, Maddie picks up a glowing box.  As she holds the box she has some sort of out of body experience where it looks like she is free floating in space.  She puts the box down and Nolan smiles knowingly at her. I suppose she is officially in the secret circle now. But what the heck was that “vision”?

I cannot answer that but we can look at Jennifer McMahon’s journey through the episode, starting with her monitoring every move in the Bowman house.  She is interrupted to go meet with her new boss, Tom Bennett. Tom asks Jennifer about Beau and Will and not so subtly questions her loyalty to Homeland’s objectives.

The current objectives are capturing Broussard and his terrorist group as well as recovering an important object to the hosts. Jennifer will  be given a brief period to achieve said goals before being placed elsewhere. (By the way, Tom blinks excessively – isn’t that a sign of lying?)

Jennifer arrives home to find her house ransacked by Red Hats looking for evidence of disloyalty.  They find nothing. Jennifer is emotional as she picks up a broken frame with a photo her late fiance.

Jennifer goes to the Yonk and basically tries to blackmail Katie into giving up Broussard. Katie claims she does not know his whereabouts. We are left with the two at a standstill.

There was an enormous amount of content in season 2 episode 2 of Colony. Allegiances were tested and new alliances may be forming.New characters arrived on screen and fan favorite Snyder resurfaced. Plus, we now have even more family secrets.

Come back next week to learn more!
