Dave Chappelle And Netflix – A Match Made In Heaven
Back when Chappelle’s Show was still airing weekly 13 years ago, he once said – “Better not bring your kids!” The quote comes to mind as Netflix made a surprise announcement today.
On the same day that Netflix announced all of the movies and television shows being added to the streaming service in December, the streaming giant revealed another nugget. The announcement, made very simplistically over Twitter, said the following. “News: 3 new Dave Chappelle comedy specials, coming soon.”
Lord knows how much Netflix is shelling out to Chappelle but given Netflix is doubling down on original content for 2017, the company probably gave him the right amount. The comedian is having a stellar fall, coming off a hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live that arguably was the single best episode in years. The most popular sketch of the night was tied with his election night skit with special guest Chris Rock (lampooning a viewing party with a group of young Democrats) and his Chappelle’s Show-inspired Walking Dead sketch, with many of his famous characters being circled by Negan and Lucille.
Chappelle isn’t the only comedian jumping to the streaming giant. Recently Chris Rock too signed a two-comedy special deal in a payday that’s still unfathomable. In December alone viewers can watch new specials from both Reggie Watts and Gabriel Iglesias.
Chappelle’s first comedy special isn’t dated yet but expect it to launch on Netflix sometime in 2017.
Jerrold spent his childhood in southeastern Pennsylvania ingesting far too many TV shows and movies, thus creating a stark-raving mad geek. He’s a movie aficionado, binge-watches Netflix, and is a total TV junkie. His addiction has led to an unhealthy and rabid obsession of various geek pantheons – Star Trek, Star Wars, both DC *AND* Marvel,
cult 80’s and 90’s television, Supernatural, The X-Files, Doctor Who, and, and…holy overload. He’s still waiting to run away in a 1967 Impala or a blue police box.
