Daryl Dixon makes it to Alexandria in new clip from The Walking Dead

Entertainment Weekly has been the hub of information for fans of The Walking Dead especially in the weeks leading up to the season 7 premiere and the ones since.  EW had exclusive interviews with members of the cast on their big/favorite scenes, what to expect in the future, and some heart-warming commentary about their bond as a family. In terms of exclusives, EW just provided fans with another one as a clip they posted showed a fan favorite returning to Alexandria.

When the group knelt in front of Negan in the season 7 premiere, Daryl lost his ability to remain calm as Negan taunted the people he loved – specifically a moment where he was trying to scare Rosita – and physically lashed out.  In this moment, and the ones after, it seemed that Daryl’s fate was anything but secure as he was tossed into a vehicle and taken away from an already broken group.

We saw Daryl for the first time since that fateful moment during ‘The Cell’ and the episode was anything but pleasant. He was trapped in a cell, naked and eating dog food, before being beaten for trying to escape, being tossed around like a subhuman, and being broken in every sense of the word.  However, at the end of the episode, after fans worried that he may have officially been reduced to a guilt-ridden scared existence, he found some inner strength.  While most thought that strength could have been something that wounded him further as he – once again – stood up to Negan, it seems to have helped his cause.

In EW’s exclusive clip fans see Negan approach the gates of Alexandria and instead of them being opened with a loving gesture, Rick and Rosita look at Negan with hesitation.  Upon being told not to make Negan ask, Rick opens the gate as he says “you said a week” insinuating that Negan is too early for whatever exchange is about to happen.

Negan calls Rick out and asks him to watch as he uses Lucille to take down a walker, too reminiscent of how Lucille also took away Abraham and Glenn, and the look on Negan’s face says that’s exactly what he was going for.  The camera then pans out to the group who accompanied Negan and as he speaks, you see a familiar face looking at Rick and Rosita in a moment that words wouldn’t do justice.

“Alright everybody, let’s get started….big day.”

Daryl is stood, still in his new get up, behind Dwight. Is anyone else used to that yet? We just can’t wrap our heads around it. New get up or not, however, we are here for him being out of that dark small cell and seeing his loved ones again, even in this awkward exchange. While it’s clear that Daryl has no plans to concede to Negan or Dwight, it seems that he’s worked something out on his own that makes this entire thing tolerable as he finds out how to get back to his group.
