Last week, we left off with the mystery creature finally emerging from the pool of blood. Sybil (Nathalie Kelley), the siren, continues to force Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) to trap helpless victims. She questions Enzo’s loyalty while she begins to kill her prey.

Meanwhile back in Mystic Falls, it’s Caroline’s (Candice King) turn to write to Elena in their journal, letting her know that Enzo has been leaving clues for Bonnie (Kat Graham) which is given them some hope. She also writes about how she has moved in with Stefan (Paul Wesley), who has recently taken up to remodeling projects to perhaps keep his mind off of losing Damon to the siren. After last week, she is relieved that her kids are safe and Seline, the nanny, is alive.

Damon thinks he has outsmarted Sybil by hiding what he loves most however, she knows something is up. He’s constantly napping. However, that minor annoyance is nothing compared to the fact that she is completely unable to penetrate Enzo’s mind, since the first time she grabbed hold of him. Enzo tries to deflect, but she persists and as she forces her way into his mind, she obtains a name – Sarah Nelson. Oh no! Does that name ring a bell?

We return to Bonnie, Caroline, and Stefan continuing their search on finding more clues to lead them to Enzo and Damon. Carolyn uses research for work as a cover to search for possible murder cases in the area where they were last spotted. As Bonnie and Caroline search for mysterious murder cases, with Stefan on the phone, they notice two recent deaths of woman sharing the same name – Sarah Nelson. There’s that name again! For those of you with good memories, you might recall that Sarah Nelson, aka Sarah Salvatore, is the last living relative of the Salvatore brothers. Last season, Enzo used her to get back at Stefan, but luckily Stefan was able to protect her and keep her hidden. As the trio hit the road to save Sarah, Stefan and Carolyn’s display of affection annoys Bonnie who clearly misses Enzo.

Remember the hidden room Alaric and his interns discovered in the last episode? They are now going through the room to archive everything that was found. Georgie (Allison Scagliotti), our flirty young intern, continues to incessantly tease Alaric. From their conversation, it appears Alaric is looking to publish a paper on sirens. What could have possibly sparked interest in that topic? Among the artifacts, they have uncovered a journal that Georgie has been carefully restoring. Pieces of the journal indicate that the person they found in the room has been hearing a voice of a woman. The date, 1790, was noted within the journal and seems familiar to Alaric.

Now the hunt is on for Sarah Nelson. While Damon and Enzo stalk from a park bench, Damon tells Enzo that the siren wants him to flip his switch. As they bicker, Sarah appears on the path. Enzo gives her a distinct look and very formally introduces her to Damon. Sarah, who was warned last season to be careful, knows something is wrong. As they walk around the building, she stabs Damon with a dose of vervain. Enzo quickly tells her she needs to leave the country. When Enzo brings Sarah back to her apartment, Stefan, Caroline, and Bonnie are all waiting.

Back at the armory, Alaric and Georgie are looking for any more information on 1790. As they search for artifacts that arrived prior to the 1800’s, Alaric finds a curious symbol in a book. Upon seeing the symbol, Georgie displays a flash of recognition and rushes out of the room.

Now that Bonnie is finally able to talk to Enzo, she pleads with him to come back with them. However, Enzo is still fighting mind control and after 87 victims, Sybil is stronger than ever. She is a real siren who he must return to in order to keep everyone safe. In the other room, Sarah angrily tells Stefan that she is upset with him for secretly controlling her life and she refuses to go anywhere with him. She only trusts Enzo, so he agrees to let her go with Enzo. While Bonnie and Enzo load the car, Bonnie stabs Enzo with vervain and drives away with him in the back seat. At the same time, Damon finds Caroline in the apartment and incapacitates her. To keep her from following him, he grabs her daylight ring and throws it across the hallway where she is unable to reach. He then smashes through a window and grabs Sarah by the neck while she is talking to Stefan.

With Georgie running off so abruptly after seeing the symbol, Alaric searches for her to find out what spooked her. She reveals that she has the exact same symbol tattooed on her lower waist. She explains that she saw this symbol when she was dead. DEAD? We knew she had to have a story! After a car accident, where she killed her passenger friend, she woke up some place strange. She saw this symbol in that place. After she was revived, she spent the last year serving time for vehicular manslaughter and that is where she read up on hell.

It turns out there is an artifact that also has the same symbol. Could this be an instrument made in hell and will the Devil make an appearance in this final season?

Bonnie high tails it out of town with Enzo. However, when he comes to, he pleads with her to return. His mind is bonded with the siren and the effect of being too far from her begins with his nosebleeds and hearing her singing voice in his head. Bonnie begs him to stay, but Enzo states he has to go back in order to keep her safe and she needs to let him go.

Back in the apartment, Stefan is trying to convince Damon that he has to let Sarah go. It appears his appeal is working as Damon slowly releases his hold on Sarah and tells her to run. However, nothing is that simple. When Sarah opens the door, Sybil is there and stabs her. She then disables Stefan with her mind control, while Sarah lies bleeding on the floor. Unfortunately for Damon, Sybil has overheard Stefan’s remark that “this is not what Elena would have wanted.” Now she knows Damon’s weakness!

The siren berates Damon for not killing Sarah as instructed. She becomes aware that Damon has some humanity left even though he has tried to convince her otherwise. Her curiosity has now peaked and so she takes hold of him and enters his mind. In a flash, they are back in his dream. Sybil witnesses his encounter with Elena and sees their whole relationship through his mind. In a twisted move, she takes Elena’s place. This can’t be good! Sybil and Damon leave the apartment ignoring Stefan’s pleads for Damon to fight. He has no choice but to helplessly watch Sarah slowly die on the floor.

Bonnie finally makes it back to where Caroline is and grabs her daylight ring. She tells her that she couldn’t break the hold that the siren has on Enzo. They then begin to argue about how happy Caroline and Stefan are and how it hurts Bonnie to see them, since she so desperately wants the same thing with Enzo. She feels alone and miserable. Caroline realizes how bad she has been hurting and feels terrible for not being a better friend. Caroline swears she will help Bonnie and they will save Enzo. Stefan then appears with the sad news about Sarah.

As Enzo returns to Damon and Sybil feeding on another human in the pool, Damon attacks him and in his weakened state, Sybil forces her way into his mind. She now knows about Bonnie and I think we all know who’s next on her hit list!

Back at the house, Stefan is saddened by the loss of Sarah. They no longer have a blood relative left and he blames himself. As Caroline tries to comfort him and tells him not to lose hope, he walks her into the room that he has been remodeling. All the work he has been doing has been so her twins had a place to stay anytime they visited! Cue the “awwww!” He tells her to check out the antique dresser and as she opens the top drawer, she discovers a ring box. WOAH! What a way to end an episode – a marriage proposal!
