‘The Walking Dead’ EP Greg Nicotero Promises a “Larger World” in Season 7

Earlier this week, executive producer, director and special effects master Greg Nicotero confirmed that he spent “the hardest two weeks of his life” directing the upcoming Season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead.  Today, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nicotero dishes on some more intel for the highly anticipated forthcoming season.

Aside from what’s sure to be an epic conclusion to the Season 6 finale cliff hanger, Nicotero promises that our group of survivors will find a much larger world, beyond the comforts of their group.  Nicotero tells EW:

“The fact that anytime you see a trailer for something, it’s the promise of these new worlds that’s exciting. You’re opening a new chapter and you’re going into a different direction, and that’s where we are, and it’s going to happen pretty rapidly and pretty dramatically as we get into episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4.

We’re really going to get a great sense of a larger world and what these different communities are like, who the people are that are there and what they have to offer, so for us, it’s very exciting. The scripts are fantastic. You know, the first episode, obviously, was pretty intense and pretty brutal, and pretty sad and emotional and definitely a challenge for everybody involved to sort of take us to this different place, but the show has a lot of really unique flavors to offer.”

When asked about the scope of the Season 7 premiere, Nicotero explained:

“It’s a much different story because we’re opening a different chapter, and one thing you’ve got to think about is this death changes who our characters are and propels them in a different direction. That’s one of the reasons why we felt that having the death in the premiere episode was warranted. Yeah, it’s a cliffhanger and I get that people were anxious and excited about knowing what happened, and seeing where it goes with the story, but truth of the matter is, that death propels our story forward, and has a direct effect on people. And that’s why you really want it to be the anchor point of our season 7 as opposed to the parting moment of season 6, and then sort of starting already partially into our story.”

And finally, when asked about the likelihood of introducing new prevalent characters to our group of survivors, Nicotero simply replied:

“I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to get a chance to meet a lot of new people.”

We agree that “it’s safe to say” there will be lots of new faces in Season 7.  Recent reports have confirmed the addition of new characters unique to the show as well as the addition of four cast members to series regulars but, just how will these new characters fit into The Walking Dead world?  We’ll find out when The Walking Dead returns in October.
