Sony Announces ‘Ghostbusters’ Animated Series Coming To Television

Just weeks before the theatrical release of the new Ghostbusters reboot, Sony Pictures Animation has announced plans to add a new animated series to the franchise.

Though the franchise has previously had animated counterparts (The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters) to the films, this new installment of the animated TV series titled, Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, will follow a whole new generation of ghoul hunters, taking place in year 2050.  The series will follow the team as they travel the world hunting and busting ghosts.

This means that the current cast of the new reboot (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon) will likely not be a part of the upcoming series.

Leading the animated project is Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two Ghostbusters films along with his team from Ghost Corps. The animated series is aiming for a 2018 debut and the Ghostbusters reboot will hit theaters on July 15.

Sony Pictures Animation also announced television series adaptions for Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy With a Chance of MeatballsHotel Transylvania: The Television Series is set to premiere in 2017 on The Disney Channel and will follow Dracula’s teenage daughter and her friends.  Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is also set to debut in 2017 on Cartoon Network.
