Ringling Bros. Circus Elephants Take Their Final Bow

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus has officially retired the use of elephants from The Greatest Show on Earth. This past Sunday was the last show in which the animals will perform.

Last spring, the company announced its plan to retire the animals to a nature preserve in 2018 however, due to growing public concern and outrage regarding the treatment of the elephants, Ringling Bros. decided to retire the elephants sooner than planned.

According to an article from NPR, a total of 11 elephants were featured in the final two shows in Wilkes Barre, PA and Providence, RI. Now officially retired, the elephants join 30 others at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation. The facility is 200 acres and, now, claims to be “the largest Asian elephant herd in the Western Hemisphere.”

It’s the end of an era for the circus but, only the beginning of a great, retiree life for the elephants.
