Nothing bad ever happens when you mess with time. Of course, that was before we found out about Time Wraiths.
Team Flash is still struggling with Jay’s betrayal and how to make Barry faster. Barry thinks that maybe they’ve been looking at it all wrong and should take a scientific approach, but he still can’t crack it. While at dinner with the Wests, Wally brings up his research and says that he read reports from car makers who revolutionized how fast cars could go. This gives Barry the incredibly crazy idea that he should travel back in time and ask Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne about getting faster using a scientific formula.
Harry is against Barry going back, but he won’t listen. Barry will travel back to when Team Flash first battled Hartley Rathaway, aka Pied Piper. He will use a tranquilizer on that time’s Barry and use those six hours to get information out of Harrison. But as Barry travels through the Speed Force, he is attacked by a Time Wraith and knocked out of his path, making him arrive not when he had intended. Barry manages to figure out a way to take down himself (this was a rather cool fight sequence), and assumes his identity. He takes in Pied Piper and goes to Harrison to work out the speed equation.
Everything seems to be going okay until the Time Wraith attacks the police department. After this, Harrison becomes more suspicious, until Barry slips and Harrison knows that he is from the future. The next scene was really fantastic as Harrison examines what it could mean for him since Barry has come from the future. He at first believes that since Barry is alive, that means he did not succeed in his plan. Barry lies and says that they sent Harrison into the future to his own time. Harrison then says he could just kill future Barry, but Barry says that he left a note for Team Flash that tells them everything, and if he were to die, they would find out the truth and Harrison wouldn’t be going anywhere.
Meanwhile, the Time Wraith comes back and attacks Cisco and Caitlin. They get in the cell with Pied Piper, who manipulates his gauntlet to send out a frequency that momentarily disrupts the Time Wraith. Barry tells Cisco and Caitlin that the wraith is after him and then everything finally falls apart when the current Barry reappears. Our Barry tells the team the truth that he is from the future and needs help getting back. He will take the wraith with him so that it will leave them alone. He then asks Cisco and Caitlin to figure out how to get rid of it for good so that, in the future, they will be able to stop it.
Barry is running to get back to his timeline when the Time Wraith appears and almost stops him from jumping into the Speed Force, but the other Barry interferes. Barry gets back to his own time and the wraith appears. Cisco and Caitlin try the device that they created, but it doesn’t work. The wraith grabs hold of Barry and starts accelerating his life, making Barry look just like the wraith, but then it is hit from behind by a sound frequency. Hartley altered his gauntlet and kills the wraith. He then smiles at Team Flash and says that if they ever need him again to call. I was hoping that Hartley would have a change of heart and become a good guy, and it looks like Barry’s meddling in the timeline changed his path. So something good came out of all that mess! Barry also came back with a memory stick that contains the information on how to get faster.
This episode had a lot of great scenes, but the one that rips your heart to shreds is Eddie’s birthday message to Iris. Iris is struggling as she is starting to date her
new boss. She isn’t allowing herself to be with someone else because she feels guilty. When Barry went back in time, Eddie was still alive, so he had him record a message to Iris. It was so heartfelt. I miss Eddie. He was a good guy.
We have six episodes left this season and I have a feeling things are about to get really crazy.
