‘Bates Motel’ Season 4: Where We Left Off Last Season

If you’ve been following the Bates Motel saga for any amount of time, you know very well that this show masters a lot of dramatic twists and turns. Well, with the new season fast approaching, we thought it would be a good idea to give you a refresher of where we left off with our favorite motel dwellers last season. Here we go:

Norman
Season 3 was a pivotal one for Norman. He became motel manager, dated and broke up with Emma, and was a person of interest in the disappearance of yet another woman. But this was just surface level stuff.

We also saw Norman sink deeper into the abyss and finally become one with Mother. As Mother, Norman brutally murders Bradley and disposes of the evidence.

Norma
Norma ended last season with very little hope that Norman would ever have a fighting chance at a healthy existence. After desperately trying and failing to get Norman the help he needs, Norma’s left drained by Norman’s aggressive behavior.

But Season 3 wasn’t all bad news for Norma. She and Romero connected in a way that seemed to hint at a future romance. And her relationship with Dylan drastically improved as compared to previous seasons. She also reluctantly reconnected with her brother Caleb which seemed to mend some of her old wounds.

Dylan

Dylan and his dad/uncle Caleb grew closer in Season 3. They bonded over family-friendly things like marijuana, brother-sister incest, and gun runs gone bad. All in all, the Caleb and Dylan union was a bit painful to watch. But it was a necessary pain that helped us understand Norma and her unusual relationships with the men in her life.

At the end of the season, Dylan is shocked to learn that Caleb has left town. And surprisingly, he and Emma find what appears to be real love.

Romero
Sheriff Romero let his true feelings for Norma shine through last season, as was evidenced by his never-ending attempts to save her from herself. He spent a good portion of the season protecting Norma from the bad guys in town and he managed to succeed. The last time we saw him, he had just killed Bob Paris (Norma’s rival) in cold blood.

Emma
We found out that Emma’s lung capacity has diminished and that she desperately needs a lung transplant. Through Dylan’s charitable (also dangerous) efforts, he’s able to secure the money Emma’s father needs to bump her up on the transplant list. In the end, Dylan convinces a hesitant Emma to go ahead and have the surgery.
