12 Days After Release, ‘Rogue One’ Crosses $600 Mil

If there are any naysayers left out there that were worried a standalone Star Wars movie wouldn’t make bank and would threaten any future standalone films – well, time to toss your worries aside.
As of December 27th, Star Wars: Rogue One has officially crossed the $600 million worldwide benchmark. Keep in mind, the film only debuted just twelve days ago. On Tuesday the first standalone feature in the Star Wars universe grossed $22.5 million domestically, part of a total gross of $42.4 million for the day. The film’s success continues to fuel Disney’s record-breaking year at the box office, which has already crossed the $7 billion milestone.
Rogue One has accumulated $340.6 million Stateside, surpassing both Suicide Squad ($325.1 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice ($330.4 million) to become the seventh-highest release of 2016. To date, fellow Disney release Finding Dory leads the 2016 domestic box office with a total gross of $486.3 million. With the end of the year in sight, the Rebels most likely don’t stand a chance to take the top spot but will certainly place within the top five of 2016.
At this rate, we can expect Star Wars: Rogue One to cross the $1 billion benchmark sometime in January 2017 – not bad for a movie that didn’t have the same fever pitch as The Force Awakens just a year ago. Star Wars: Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, and Donnie Yen. Scripted by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, the Gareth Edwards-directed film is in your local theater now (and for a long while to come).
