‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoff Series Casts Three Lead Roles

The new spinoff series in The Walking Dead universe has just taken its first major steps towards filming. The new series has cast three major lead roles.

According to Variety, Alexa Mansour (Unfriended: The Dark Web), Nicolas Cantu (The Amazing World of Gumball), and Hal Cumpston have all joined the project in starring roles. While official character descriptions have not yet been released from AMC, Variety says that Mansour’s character is a “good-natured rule-breaker who lives for today.” Cantu’s character is described as a “friendly and old soul,” and Cumpston’s character is described as “a shy loner.”

The news of a third Walking Dead series was announced earlier this year in April. A press release from AMC detailed that the series, “will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.” Mansour will be filling one of the lead roles and a second role is still yet to be cast.

Scott M. Gimple and longtime Walking Dead writer and producer Matt Negrete.  Negrete will also serve as showrunner.

At the time of the series announcement, Gimple said in a statement:

[row]“Showing audiences an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead Universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead’ on TV and over fifteen years of Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic. Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD’s long history — I’m thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we’ve seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world.”[/row]

The Walking Dead is about to enter its 10th season on AMC and Fear the Walking Dead is in the midst of its 5th season on the network. Additionally, a trilogy of Walking Dead films are in the works centering around Rick Grimes. The new spinoff series is said to begin filming this summer and will begin with a 10-episode season airing in 2020.

  1. I don’t know if or when I’ll get to see this in the UK and the naff description of the characters makes me worried it’s attempting to capture the “Yoof” market, rather than deal with the fascinating idea of what the Judiths and the wee girl Michonne spared would grow up to be like. Hope I’m wrong, though and I’ll definitely give it a fair try. I just hope it doesn’t join the other two in having interconnected storylines we see all out of step here, ‘cos that would really turn my brain to mush! Also hope we won’t get too many spoilers like we are for Fear..-4years ahead of hope-for broadcast.
