‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Premiere Will Be Super-Sized with an Extended Run Time

The Walking Dead is gearing up to pack a big punch right out of the gate when the series returns for its ninth season next month.

Comicbook.com reports that the season nine premiere episode will feature a super extended runtime of close to 90 minutes! The episode will premiere in its regular 9 PM EST timeslot on Sunday, October 7th and it will run all the way through 10:26 PM EST with Talking Dead airing immediately following.

The upcoming season certainly has plenty of storylines to address, so extended episodes are more than welcomed by fans. The ninth season will kick off with a time jump for our characters. The timeline will move a year and a half forward, after the end of all-out-war. While the communities are focusing on rebuilding and moving forward, new dangers threaten their newly reestablished way of life. Check out the detailed season synopsis below.

[row]”Last season brought the culmination of “All Out War,” which pitted Rick Grimes and his group of survivors against the Saviors and their cunning leader, Negan. With Negan’s life in his hands, Rick had a character-defining choice in front of him. By making the unilateral decision to spare Negan, Rick upheld the values his late son, Carl, championed in order to build for the future, but created conflict within his group.

Now, we see our survivors a year and a half after the end of the war, rebuilding civilization under Rick’s steadfast leadership. It is a time of relative peace among the communities as they work together, looking to the past to forge the future, but the world they knew is rapidly changing as man-made structures continue to degrade, and nature takes over, changing the landscape and creating new challenges for our survivors.

As time passes, the communities confront unexpected obstacles, danger, and of course, walkers, but nothing quite prepares them for the formidable force they are about to encounter, which threatens the very idea of civilization that our survivors have worked so hard to build.”[/row]

In addition to new threats, this season will come with several changes. The long-awaited Whisperers will finally be making their on-screen debut. Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst is just one of the new cast members joining the series. Hurst was recently cast as Beta, a pivotal Whisperers character.

In addition to new cast joining The Walking Dead world, there will also be two major departures. Series star Andrew Lincoln (who plays Rick Grimes) confirmed his speculated exit from the series earlier this year and Lauren Cohan’s future on series is in question as she has begun working on her new show, ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier. Both Cohan and Lincoln are said to appear in just six episodes in the upcoming season, though Cohan’s future on the series is still said to be “open-ended.”

The Walking Dead will return to AMC with new episodes starting on October 7th.
