‘Supernatural’ Recap: ‘Last Call’

Two weeks ago, “Golden Time,” showed us that Rowena taught Sam Winchester a thing or two. This week opens in Texhoma, Texas, with two best friends, Sally and Angela, at last call. Angela is attempting to make sure that Sally gets home safely; however, as Sally is getting sick outside of the car, something is grappling with Angela inside. The next time she looks over to see the vehicle, it is gone. Confused, Sally begins to call out her name. Not to much avail, the show cuts to a dingy looking basement where Angela is being kept captive. Some creature is inside of a cage and shows its face at the end. What kind of animal we don’t know.

All we know is this is the next hunt for the Winchester Brothers after Dean pleads with the internet to give him something. Or so we think. Eileen and Sam are in the kitchen, cooking up breakfast in the kitchen after a night of margaritas. Dean must leave the bunker, so he turns down food and heads off for the hunt on his own. As Dean begins to question the sheriff, we realize they do not consider Angela a missing person’s case because no one can find her car. She went elsewhere to get away from the small town. Bearing in mind Sally’s issues, no one is taking her seriously as she is always at the bar, Angela was helping her left that night. Swayze’s, of course.

The strange requirement for the bar is that everyone must turn over their cellphone. Lee Webb (Christian Kane), the owner of the bar and the musician on stage, insists that Lorna get them a beer. As they sit down to talk, their drink becomes dedicated to John Winchester. Lee decided that he couldn’t continue being a hunter anymore and had to walk away. Dean asks him if he regrets his decision, and he admits not once as the two of them and Lorna continue to drink an obscene amount of Yeager with one another.

Although Dean wants to trust Lee, I think he is the culprit who took Angela in the first place. Especially after he denies knowing who she is until Lorna comes over and reminds him who she is and that she’s in there frequently. He asks Lee, “Who is going to kill the bad guys?” Lee says, “Somebody else.” He also reminds him that considering how many lives he’s saved over the years, he’s due for a break, maybe even two. In an attempt to get said vacation, he brings up a song that John used to play them before going on hunts.

Dean gets up with Lee in front of the house to sing “Good Ol’ Boys” by Waylon Jennings. After enjoying their moment on stage, they see two men shoving Sally. And in a bar named Swayze’s, of course, there are Roadhouse rules to obey! Lee and Dean approach the two men who refuse to leave before throwing one out the window and one out of the door. Lucky for Dean, he has now found precisely the person he came to the bar for in the first place.

Meanwhile, Sam and Eileen are at the bunker tiptoeing around, liking one another as Cas burst through the door. Instead of returning Sam’s phone calls, he shows up instead. Cas points out that his thoughts on Sam’s wound. He believes a piece of Sam lodged inside of God because of when he fired the bullet from The Equalizer. Cas knows for sure he cannot heal the wound, but he might be able to gather some information out of the injury. As Cas attempts to learn more, energy exudes from Sam’s wound, throwing him back against a wall and making him unconscious.

Desperate as he cannot get in touch with Dean, Cas calls Sergei (Dimitri Vantis), who he feels owes him after the fiasco with attempting to heal Jack in the episode “Unhuman Nature” early last season. Threatening him with death, Sergei arrives at the bunker, amazed that The Men of Letters did exist. Pulling out a crystal to exam Sam, the white crystal glows exceptionally bright. Surprised, Sergei admits to Eileen and Cas that Sam is dying.

Sergei explains that the wound goes down to his soul. However, as Cas attempted to probe deeper, he forced Sam’s soul to stretch. Sergei explains that his soul is like a rubber band and cannot be extended any further because it will snap. Sergei assures Eileen he can fix Sam. However, Cas has heard this all before and has skeptical written all over his face. Sergei has mixed something to put in Sam’s wound, and Cas is still weary because of last time. He, of course, has good reason to because he has expediated the process so he can have the key to death.

Eileen and Cas are not messing around this time.  Cas isn’t going to play his game this time. He reveals the blackmail he has over him to get him to heal Sam so that he doesn’t immediately die. Cas has Bobby looking over Sergei’s niece.  Giving into Cas’s demands, he goes back into the room with Sam and makes good on his original promise.  Despite not getting anything for free this time, they consider themselves even all things considered. The primary good that has come out of this equation is that Sam now knows that Chuck isn’t at full strength.

Dean finally gets a moment to sit down and talk to Sally as Lee fixes the window of his bar. She tells him everything, including her altogether disappearance. She determines that Angela and her car have experienced the rapture. After years of being out of the business, Lee agrees to help Dean. As he heads to the scrapyard, he tells Lee to go if someone has disposed of the car at the nearby lake. However, Dean doesn’t have to look far as when he finds the car in the scrapyard; he finds Angela’s body in the back. As a gun cocks, Dean turns to see Lee standing behind him because he could not leave well enough alone.

Tied to the chair, much like Angela, Lee comes downstairs to explain to Dean what is going on. Dean insists that this isn’t Lee. Lee repeats that he wasn’t kidding about Arizona changing him. If they could not defeat that kind of evil, what was the point? So he chose to have fun. He admits to finding the monster that merely requires food. It gives you money and health in return. Lee explains after all those years of hunting; they deserved some happiness. That is why he keeps the monster around. The world doesn’t care, and neither does Lee. Dean is the only one that seems to care, and Lee admits this is what got him there as he connects a tube so the monster can drink Dean’s blood.

Managing to get away from the monster, Dean proceeds to cut off its head as well, completely ruining Lee’s life in the process. As he takes it in, he then begins shooting at Dean in the bar. After the gunfire ceases, Dean insists that this is not the Lee he remembers. Lee insists that he’s the one who woke up and realized that you couldn’t fix the world. Lee asks him to pretend like this never happened, but Dean knows that he has to stay and fight him despite the fact he doesn’t want to kill Lee, but his job is to kill monsters. After a brutal fight with one another, Dean comes out victorious by stabbing Lee with the pool cue that he attempted to kill him with moments earlier.

Dean finally returns to the bunker to find Cas. They are still avoiding talking to one another and sorting out any issues the two have with each other.  Instead, they learn of Sam’s visions.  They learn that they might be able to defeat God.

  1. Such a great moment when Dean and Cas see each other again. Rather than writing endless dialogue to cover the encounter, they are practically wordless.

    Both actors rocked the scene.

    Brilliant

Also, loved the scene where Dean has to let his ex-friend die (by pulling out the pool cue). I hope we will see JA in lots and lots of high quality stuff once this show is ended.

  2. I agree! That scene was one of the most understated of the evening. They both know they need to talk to each other but neither are ready. Absolutely brilliant.

You and me both. He’s an amazing actor.
