‘Star Wars’: A Conversation Between R2-D2 and BB-8 Explained

Caution: this article may contain spoilers for those who haven’t gotten a hold of Star Wars: Poe Dameron #28 which is on sale now.

Star Wars: The last Jedi left a lot of unanswered questions, and Star Wars: Poe Dameron #28 addresses some of those questions.

We have already found out that Poe, who is replacing Han Solo as Chewbacca’s new co-pilot on the Millennium Falcon, is Force-Sensitive. We have gathered a lot of information on how major players like Rey, Finn, Chewbacca, and General Leia process their thoughts especially after Luke Skywalker’s sacrifice on Crait.

Having learned as much as we have, it is exciting to read Issue #28 because it focuses on beloved but misunderstood R2-D2, who usually only gets some comic relief in the form of emotional “Boop beep”. Charles Soule takes a huge leap and now shines a new light on R2-D2. Instead of treating him as just a supporting character, we get to better understand the droid’s feelings about the incredible journey he’s been on over the decades in which the Star Wars stories we know take place in. They’ve certainly taken their toll on the capable little guy.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #28 begins with conversation between two characters. At this point it’s unclear who is speaking, Luke and Leia? They continue to talk about the endless wars they’ve fought but specifically focus on the end of The Force Awakens where rebels took out the First Order’s Starkiller base. Although we don’t know the two characters, the talk goes deeper into J.J. Abrams’ movie. One would think that the conversation is between Luke and Leila, but it later turns out that it was a Soule-misdirection and the conversation is between R2-D2 and BB-8.

From the conversation, we learn that BB-8 is very childlike and calm but brave, while R2-D2 is humble and eager to teach using his back-story as an aid. BB-8 describes being nervous to fly with Poe, but how he is grateful for the adventures and the opportunity to free the galaxy. He says he is inspired by the relentless souls of the rebels to fight against Kylo Ren’s men. He also praises and idolizes R2-D2.

It is an unofficial passing of the baton when R2-D2 praises Rey, Han, and Leia because of how much they inspire everyone. The droid asks BB-8 to be steadfast, and treats him as an apprentice. During their conversation, R2-D2 discloses a lot about the price of spending time on the field, but he thinks that the light will prevail. Their conversation seems to be therapeutic as R2-D2 speaks of loss and how hope kept him going.

Did these new details of their personalities surprise you, or did you already see their bond?
