WATCH: Ruby Rose Gets Emotional About Being Cast as ‘Batwoman’

This week has been a huge whirlwind for actress Ruby Rose. Not only does her new movie The Meg premiere this week, but the announcement that she had been cast as DC’s television version of Batwoman in the Arrowverse broke on Tuesday.

Speaking about the news for the first time on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Rose explained that she received the news just prior to walking the red carpet at The Meg premiere. She was so overcome with emotions, and quite frankly terrified that she would let the news slip out since it hadn’t been made public yet, that she inadvertently avoided the press lines at the film premiere. Rose said she kept getting emotional and kept crying, happy tears, of course!

She explained to Fallon further why she feels she got so emotional. It was the realization that the role of Batwoman is a complete and total game changer. Rose, who identifies as gender fluid, will be portraying the openly gay character on television, and she feels like she’s finally giving her younger self a role model to look up to in the superhero world. Rose said:

[row]“I feel like the reason I get so emotional, growing up watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero. I have always had this saying — I mean, not me, Oscar Wilde — which is be yourself because everyone else is taken. So, I always live by that motto, and the second motto when I came into the industry was be the person that you needed when you were younger. I feel like one motto led to another.”[/row]

The Arrowverse stars are already welcoming Rose with open arms. On Thursday, Arrow star Stephen Amell tweeted, “Hey @RubyRose — Welcome!! It’s characters like Batwoman that will carry our Universe into the future. See you soon!”

Check out Ruby Rose’s interview with Jimmy Fallon below.

According to Entertainment Weekly, The CW describes Batwoman’s introduction to the universe of Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl as follows: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
