Lisa Edelstein Discusses Her Guest Role on ‘The Good Doctor’ Season 2

Last month, it was announced that Lisa Edelstein (House) would be joining the cast of The Good Doctor in a guest-starring role. She will be playing a character named Dr. Blaize, a recently suspended expert oncologist who returns to St. Bonaventure at Dr. Glassman’s request in order to help with his cancer treatments. Edelstein is best known for her role on Fox’s hit medical series House where she played the role of Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Dean of Medicine. House was written and executive produced by David Shore who is also the creator of The Good Doctor.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Edelstein spilled some details on her Good Doctor character. She said:

[row]”Dr. Blaize is not a fan of Dr. Glassman. There is definitely a mutual respect there, work-wise, but these are two people who get on each other’s nerves and constantly revisit old arguments; just waiting for the moment they can prove they were right. He knows that going to her for help will also mean she might take it as an opportunity for payback over past annoyances, but it’s worth the risk because he wants to live, and she is the most brilliant oncologist around.”[/row]

Taking into account Edelstein’s description of Dr. Blaize, this could certainly make for some interesting encounters during the series’ second season. Edelstein also revealed that she and Richard Schiff (who plays Dr. Glassman) go way back in real life. She said:

[row]”Richard and I have worked together over and over again. He actually played my (obviously way too young) father in Relativity… and Richard’s wife actually taught me how to strip – for House. (Seriously, there’s a class for that) because my character, the head of the hospital, takes some time out to pole dance in a school girl uniform – an obvious turn of events when you are playing the head of a hospital, right? I definitely don’t see Dr. Blaize stripping, although it is another David Shore show so… let me just say I definitely don’t see her stripping anytime soon.”[/row]

While Edelstein’s Dr. Blaize is a guest role on the series, she did say that her presences will carry on throughout a good portion of the season. We are certainly looking forward to seeing how Dr. Blaize and Dr. Glassman interact with each other and how Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore) reacts to their friction-filled relationship.

The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Will Yun Lee, Fiona Gubelmann, Paige Spara and Christina Chang. In addition to creating and writing, Shore also serves executive producer along with Lost and Hawaii Five-O alum Daniel Dae Kim.

The Good Doctor returns to ABC Monday nights this fall.
