‘Godzilla vs Kong’ Release Date Delayed

Kaiju lovers will have to wait a bit longer for the upcoming brawl between Godzilla and King Kong. Warner Bros. and Legendary’s next installment in the ‘Monsterverse’, Godzilla vs Kong, has been delayed by 8 months.

Originally, the film was going to hit theaters on March 13, 2020, but now we’ll have to wait until November 20, 2020.

So, why has it been delayed?

It’s not entirely clear why the date has been pushed. However, it could be due to Godzilla: King of the Monsters performance at the box office. With its $200 million production value, the sequel was considered a financial disappointment after grossing just under $400 million worldwide. To put that into perspective, Kong: Skull Island made $566 million and 2014’s Godzilla made $524 million.

So, this could be a strategy to revamp their film in a way that will ensure a better reception. The studios may also want to give audiences some space. King of the Monsters was released in May 2019. Godzilla vs Kong was due just 10 months later. If they want their Monsterverse to thrive, spacing out their movies might prevent fatigue.

As a Godzilla and Kaiju fan, I want nothing but the best for this universe. I want to see my favourite monsters in all of their glory. So while I am gutted by the delay (I dislike waiting), I do believe that it is a great idea.

However, I think releasing it in November could potentially have the opposite effect since Marvel’s Eternals is also due in November. That is tough competition.

The upcoming crossover stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Borwn, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and of course, the stars of the show, Godzilla and King Kong. It isn’t clear how these colossal beasts meet but I’m fairly sure an enemy will arrive resulting in an epic team up. I can’t wait.
