Fortnite’s ‘Star Wars’ Event a Big Hit with Lightsabers and Teasers

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took over Fortnite on Saturday. Director J.J. Abrams flew down from the sky in a ship to show off a new clip from the movie and give fans the ultimate gift: lightsabers. An in-game promotion like no other in gaming history, fans were treated to all sorts of Star Wars goodies and images.

The Millennium Falcon came down from the sky while battling some TIE fighters and a Star Destroyer. Then J.J. Abrams himself (as an avatar) came out from the the famed Falcon to greet fans and then a floating display appeared. The display projected an exclusive clip of Rise of Skywalker and then Abrams left.

Players were also able to vote on their favorite lightsaber color.  Star Wars-themed challenges have also been added. And, the best part, lightsabers are now a real weapon in the game.

Star Wars promotions within Fortnite started in November when stormtrooper character skins became available in-game. This week, skins of Rey, Finn, and a new Sith trooper from The Rise of Skywalker became available.

Also, there was wide-spread reports of server overloads with fans locked out from the event.  This could possibly be the most viewers ever together at one time, in one game.  This will be interesting to learn when Fortnite releases its official numbers.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives in theaters on December 20th.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the event in the comments below!
