‘Breaking Bad’ Film Officially in the Works

Days after AMC’s The Walking Dead announced a Rick centered trilogy of movies, the New Mexico Film Office announced that another series is getting the film treatment.

A Breaking Bad film will begin filming later this month. It has been operating under the name of Greenbrier and seems to center around a kidnapped man making an escape.

“We are happy to welcome ‘Greenbrier’ and Sony Studios to New Mexico,” said New Mexico State Film Office Director Nick Maniatis. “For years, we’ve built up the film industry in New Mexico and strengthened our film incentives; now, we’re seeing success after success for the film industry in our state.”

No other information is available at this time. It is unclear whether this film will be a prequel, like Better Call Saul, or if it’s a sequel to the Breaking Bad series. It’s also unclear if the movie will be released to theaters or to TV.

It is unclear which original characters will return for the movie. Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White, seemed less than interested in revisiting his character when he spoke at San Diego Comic-Con.

“We’re very proud of our show and Better Call Saul. In some ways, it’s best to leave it alone – that you want to think back on it favorably,” Cranston said. “I don’t want to mess with it. It was the perfect opportunity that changed all of our lives. It changed many lives on our show.”

Series creator Vince Gilligan, however, is open to revisiting other Breaking Bad characters saying “anything’s possible.” Gilligan is rumored to write the script, executive produce and possibly direct.

Greenbrier is apparently filming from November through February in New Mexico with the possibility of a 2019 release.
