‘Arrow’ EP Teases Battles Ahead Before Prometheus Showdown

Tonight, Arrow returns after its month-long hiatus in a particularly interesting episode in which Felicity Smoak will find herself going up against Team Arrow

Following the death of her beloved boyfriend, Detective Billy Malone, who was ultimately murdered by Prometheus, Felicity has been spiraling down a very dark path. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, EP Wendy Mericle touched on the Dark Path Felicity is headed down; especially in tonight’s episode ‘Dangerous Liaisons’:

We’re super psyched about this episode because it is really Felicity’s Dark Night of the Soul. We’re not going to wrap it up here, but we’re definitely going to take her to one of the darkest places we’ve ever seen her character go. Because she’s gone down this rabbit hole with Helix, she’s going to find out that — as per usual when people get themselves involved with these organizations — things aren’t always as they seem. Even though she has been really blinded by her drive to get Adrian Chase, I think she’s going to come out of this asking some pretty tough questions about herself and her moral decisions, and there’s a pretty big fight with Oliver, too.

There have been multiple times in the past few episodes where we have seen several members of Team Arrow attempt to reach out and bring Felicity back down from the raging revenge platform that she has been on. Curtis, Diggle and even Oliver himself have all attempted to reach out to her. After all, Felicity is supposed to be the light on Team Arrow.

However, Felicity won’t be the only one that is struggling to figure out who it is. Lyla, Diggle’s wife, is also fighting some demons of her very own. Following the death of Amanda Waller last Season, Lyla was next in line to take over A.R.G.U.S. It’s no secret, A.R.G.U.S has a very… interesting way of handling everything. Being in charge of A.R.G.U.S and making these dark decisions may be putting a strain on Diggle and Lyla’s marriage:

We’ve always wondered, ever since Lyla stepped up and took over A.R.G.U.S., the interesting thing about her character is she, in a lot of ways, is very similar to Oliver in that she’s now in the position of making some really hard decisions and having to constantly justify the means by the end. Dig’s going to find out about some of these things that she’s been doing, and he’s going to really wonder where did his wife go? It’s rich territory because they’ve always been such a solid couple. They’ve had their ups and downs, but I think this is the first time where Dig has looked at her and wondered that this person that he sees in front of him doesn’t really resemble the person that he fell in love with. That’s an interesting question for anyone in a marriage situation to be asking themselves.

So while we can be taking in the enjoyment of getting more Lyla, it seems as though it may not be without some repercussions. The ‘Sizzle Reel’ Trailer, which was released about a week ago, also showed several other returns. Thea is once again suiting up, Nyssa is making a come back to face off with her wicked sister, and also…. Malcolm Merlyn and Slade Wilson??

Malcolm has been causing havock on Legends of Tomorrow this season, so it will be interesting to see how he plays into this whole scenario. To be honest, I don’t trust him at all; how can you trust someone when you have absolutely no idea whose side they are really on? Wendy Mericle also answered this question in her interview with EW:

Malcolm is going to be doing exactly what he’s always done. Part of the fun of him is that you never know exactly where he stands. One thing that is absolutely clear is he’s always there for Thea. He and Thea are going to have some pretty cool scenes together because she’s going to come back and he’s going to be there. She’s not happy to see him. Oliver is going to be pulling at any possible help, whether he can trust that help or not; he’s going to be calling in every reinforcement he has to take down Chase. I think Josh Segarra has done an amazing job at really making Chase one of the scariest villains that we’ve seen on the show.

Bringing in Malcom in the fold in addition to Slade Wilson? Oliver really is pulling out all the stops with this one. You know times are tough when you start phoning in the bad guys; especially when one of them has sworn to make you suffer… and yes, I’m talking about Slade Wilson. When asked about Oliver and Slade teaming up for this ultimate showdown, which is said to be ‘the greatest battle’ Oliver has ever faced, she stated the following:

With Deathstroke, you never really know who you’re dealing with, in a similar way with Malcolm, but with a little bit more of an edge, because the history between Slade and Oliver is as deep and troubled as the one between him and Malcolm. Slade is definitely coming back. We’re definitely going to be thinking he might be on Oliver’s side. That’s all I’m going to say about that, to quote Forrest Gump. [Laughs.]

So one thing we do know about tonight’s episode is that Felicity will be hell-bent on revenge, still. Something else we now know is that Prometheus is out on the loose, headed back to Star City. When asked about how much danger is them is in, EP Wendy Mericle said the following:
It’s safe to say, without teasing too much, they’re in the most danger they’ve ever been in.

Arrow returns tonight at 8PM/EST on The CW.
