‘Sports Story’ Is The Golf Story Sequel I Didn’t Know I Wanted

I guess this is Fan Fest News, so it makes since that I’m a fan of many things. I had the pleasure of requesting my very first game as a reviewer, and that game was Golf Story. To this day it’s still one of my favorite titles, and in my opinion criminally underrated. While I’ve written about it and even made a video of it I never once thought, “This needs a sequel”. I’m here to tell you, I have been so so wrong, because Sports Story is now a thing.

The second I turned on the Nintendo Indie World Showcase today and it started with Sports Story, I lost it. Here is one of my favorite titles getting a second game. The quirkyness, the old school RPG feel, the SPORTS! I can say definitively I will need this game when it comes out next year.

Sports Story seems like it will follow the same formula as Golf Story. At least, that’s what the trailer tells me. When reading over what Sidebar Games has revealed, we don’t have much to go on past the trailer. But the track record the have (and honestly, Golf Story is so good that’s all they need) tells me I can sit back and trust them to make an amazing experience.

The amount of sports in the trailer honestly surprised me. Adding tennis makes sense, but they could have just made Tennis Story. This game throws in soccer, volleyball, along with tennis and golf and a whole lot more. There also seems to be an extra quirkyness to it with hitting toasters. I’m not sure what all to expect, but I’m excited.

As for the “Story” part, it looks like you’ll continue you adventure from the original game. This time however, you’ll be attending a world class tennis academy. There will also be tons of other things to do, with dungeons, espionage, mini-games, and buried treasure listed. All of this packed into the wonderful package of Pokemon/Stardew Valley graphics and soundtrack you can’t help but adore.

Sports Story seems to be an incredibly ambitious game. It’s taking what it did originally, and then throwing all that and the kitchen sink into the new one. It looks as charming and as whimsical as ever, and I cannot wait to play it. Sports Story is truly the sequel I never knew I wanted. Sports Story will release next year in mid-2020 on Nintendo Switch.
