Aquaman: ‘Black Manta’ Star Confirms His Characters Return to ‘Aquaman 2’

Black Manta will return for the Aquaman 2 sequel. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who portrays Black Manta, is “confident” that his character will be back to battle with Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman.

“We have a date of December 2022. Hopefully, that will hold,” Abdul-Mateen told Entertainment Weekly while being interviewed for his current show, Watchmen. “Black Manta will be back, I fee confident in scything that. I’m excited to step into that world again and cause some more trouble. I really want to add more personality anymore character to David Cane and flesh him out in Aquaman 2 and give him more of a journey.”

Abdul-Mateen aslo told ComicBook.com Black Manta “has an opportunity to show up anywhere where Aquaman is.”

“Anywhere where he has a device or plot to get back to Aquaman, he’s going to use it. So, he can show up wherever,” Abdul-Mateen said. “But when he does I hope that we get to see more of his wit and more of the comedic parts of Black Manta and see more of the things that make him [the Black Manta] that I know and the human that the fans, and the people in this universe, have grown to love over the years.”

Aquaman 2 is scheduled to open December 16, 2022, which means that production should begin sometime in 2021.

According to Deadline, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will officially be penning the Aquaman sequel. Johnson-McGoldrick is a frequent collaborator with director James Wan and co-wrote the first film along with Will Beal.

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa in the titular role along with Amber Heard (as Mera), Patrick Wilson (as the villainous Orm/Ocean Master), Temuera Morrison (as Tom Curry), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (as Queen Atlanna), Dolph Lundgren (as King Nereus) and Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (as Nuidis Vulko).

Wan directs with Peter Safran producing along with Zack and Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
