‘Supernatural’ Recap: ‘Golden Time’

Last week on Supernatural the Winchesters learned that Chuck still has a few more stories in him yet.  Though we are not sure which end is the ultimate revenge in his mind, we do know that the ending includes one Winchester killing the other.  In a way, this is very reminiscent of the season five finale of the show. One Winchester lived a happy life while we saw a glimpse that the other was alive in the least. Though nothing is certain right now, “Golden Time” has our brothers reconnecting with an old friend on a journey of discovery, triumph, and self-doubt.

Jacinda (Alex Sturman) enters Rowena’s apartment to steal from her, only to find out that was the wrong move.  Suddenly, as the woman is wondering where the “good stuff” is her nose starts to bleed.  Upon this realization, her vision blurs. She attempts to get out of the apartment immediately. However, she collapses dead due to a hex on the apartment. The show immediately cuts to Sam who is on his laptop looking up a random article about Saint Mary appearing on a three-cheese pizza.  This is all an attempt to see signs of God and Lilith.  Meanwhile, Dean is eating his way out of the bunker while watching a Scooby-Doo marathon.

During this time Sam feels a presence. While he is unsure of who said presence belongs to, upon going for a jog Sam discovers that Eileen’s spirit. She was trapped down there by the hell-hound who killed her.  Asking the Winchesters for a favor, they have to tell her the truth they told Kevin.  Even if they could ask for a favor does not mean anything because once a soul has gone to hell, that same soul cannot go to heaven.  Sam agrees to go to Rowena’s place to hunt for a crystal. He also calls Dean out.  Ever since God came back Dean is acting like nothing matters.  Going to Rowena’s matters.

Cas is attempting to take it easy in a local town by fishing.  However, when the local bait and tackle owner tells him of a young teenage boy who was drained of blood, Cas knows he cannot rest. Upon trying to talk to the local sheriff it is obvious no one in the town is taking the death of this young boy seriously.  A mom is at the station, Melly (Jennifer Spence), insists that her son is missing.  The woman asks Cas if she can help him. Intially, although my theory did not come to fruition, I felt Melly was apart of God’s plan.  Chuck has me trusting no one now!  I also think part of his plan includes attempting to kill Cas at this point which is why he was not part of the big picture of God’s story.

The sheriff finally comes back into the precinct after getting his haircut and meets with Cas. The boy in question that has died recently came out at the bluegrass festival last year.  Immediately it appears that a hate crime has occurred.  When Cas presses to find out more information, he is forced to give the sheriff a number that Dean or Sam has to answer.  Upon answering Dean immediately request that his agent be put on the phone.  Reluctantly, Cas abides.  Although Dean does not apologize he does warn him that Chuck is up to something.  Finally accessing the files, Cas begins to make notes.

He notices that all of the x’s on the map appear in one central location.  We learn later from Melly that an old silver mine is in town.  It was shut down in the 70s due to toxic runoff.  Thankfully, Cas and his mother find her son Caleb.  Cas asks Caleb if he remembers what the monster looks like who was chasing him. The young man confirms he does remember as audiences learn that the officer who was giving Cas such a hard time back at the station.  He’s a dijin. Wasting absolutely no time, Cas enters into a fight with him and almost immediately kills him.  The amount of rage in Cas is unlike we have seen before, but we have no worries the monster is gone.

Meanwhile, Sam makes his way to Rowena’s apartment with Eileen.  Together they discover the woman who attempted to steal from her.  The mirror ripples and we learn that there are two witches that are watching Rowena’s apartment.  He becomes frustrated that he cannot find Rowena’s actual stash.  With Eileen’s help, Sam realizes that it’s behind some bookshelves that lead to a secret room. He finally talks more to someone about how her death has affected him.  Upon looking through one of the journals, Rowena was attempting to bring Mary back by only using her spirit. Sam determines that Eileen can be brought back which solves their biggest problem.

The same thing that happened to the woman at the beginning starts happening to Sam as he leaves Rowena’s home though.  He signs to Eileen to go get Dean as the two witches that were watching him approach him behind the Impala. However, Sam does not die despite the hex placed on the apartment.  The witch sends him back into the apartment to grab the best ingredients from the apartment.  Emily reveals Jacinda is not even remotely a nice person. The spell to be used on Eileen instead.

Dean finally arrives on the scene.  While the fight heats up between the witches and the Winchesters, another ghost enters the picture.  As soon as Dean shoots Emily, Sam manages to attain the upper hand over her mother. Dean burns Jacinda’s body to save Eileen.  Afterward, the Winchesters bring Eileen back to the bunker where Sam uses the spell that Rowena was working on and brings Eileen back to the real world.  She no longer has to linger as a ghost or go back to hell.

Although ultimately Dean tells Sam he is proud of him this episode, Sam has to put their situation back into perspective.  They have been through worse.  They will be able to get through this, but they have to fight together.  It does not matter that they do not know what is God’s plans and what is real or not.  Together they can win, but that’s the key to all of this.  They have to be together.  Dean agrees with him, but we can tell he still has doubts about the two of them taking down God.
