Last week, it was reported that Andy Serkis was in talks to play Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Today, Matt Reeves confirmed the casting via his official Twitter account in a very playful way.

Look at him go!

So it is official. Andy Serkis, the legendary actor behind Gollum, will be aiding the caped crusader in the new Batman reboot. Now that this has been confirmed, it is very likely that we will have news regarding Colin Farrell’s involvement soon.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman now stars Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Paul Dano as The Riddler and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.

If I am correct, this means that Andy Serkis has had a role in 4 of the biggest cinematic universes to date. First he was Gollum in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, then he was Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron, then Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars and now he is Alfred in the DC universe.

What a career this man has had. Despite my love for his work in motion-capture, I am incredibly happy to see him take on more human roles. As I have mentioned previously, Serkis was definitely not at the top of my list. However, I am very excited to see what he brings to The Batman.

I think Serkis will find a great balance between offering something new and maintaining the spirit of Alfred that we all know and love.

What do you think? Will Serkis make a great Alfred? Let us know in the comments. The reboot is set to open in cinemas on June 25th 2021.
