Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam. Things have been quiet lately in Riverdale. Varchie and Bughead are doing well. Cheryl, however, still has her brother’s body in her room. Oh, and she’s mad about the Independence Day Parade.

Oh no. I didn’t expect to start the episode with Archie’s phone call… Fred (Luke Perry) died saving a stranger’s life.

Archie has a strange dream where his late grandfather tells him he is supposed to go get him. So he and the rest of the Fab Four borrow Reggie’s hearse (he has a hearse?) and head out to Cherry Creek to retrieve the body. While getting Fred’s truck, they meet the woman (Shannon Doherty) who he was helping. Together they say a prayer for Fred.

George Augustine, the man who killed Fred, turned himself in to the police. He made bail and although FP tells Archie that Fred will get justice, we all know he’ll take matters into his own hands. Archie confronts George and learns that George’s son did it. George was protecting Jeffrey who doesn’t have a license and took the car without asking.

FP gives them a police escort back into town and all of the residents come out to honor his return, thanks to Cheryl. At the funeral, Josie sings Amazing Grace (If you weren’t crying yet, grab the tissues) and Archie gives a beautiful tribute to how much Fred contributed to Riverdale.

This episode was beautiful. I was in tears. Archie, hun, I feel your pain. Losing a parent at a young age is rough and seeing the grief process played out on screen like that, I couldn’t help but reflect. Everyone involved in the production of this episode did a fabulous job with this sensitive topic. I loved the tribute at the end. So powerful.
