Pull List- The End of PoX, The Return of Doom, & John Carpenter + The Joker

Geeklings, a very Happy New Comic Book Day to you all! Believe it or not, I have been able to pull myself away from all things Breaking Bad/El Camino long enough to write up your favorite weekly comic book column. It helps that I finished my massive re-watch last night. That’s sixty-two episodes of Breaking Bad in less than a month. Yeah, that’s a brag. But let me tell you Geeklings, I have no idea what to do with my life now. I have an RV sized void that can’t be filled until Friday’s El Camino release. I’m not going to lie, could be a rough two days for your boy.

Luckily there are new comic books to distract me from my Breaking Bad/El Camino obsession. Comics, the gifts that keep on giving. I’m going to jump directly into this week’s books before I start talking about how awesome it would be for Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul to show up in El Camino. I mean, I’ve got the most perfect theory on how it could work. You can read that theory here and in the meantime, I’ll try and focus on comic books. Starting with…

Powers of X #6- And thus ends the House of X/Powers of X twelve-week event series and nothing was the same ever again. Seriously. We are on the cusp of the Dawn of X and Powers of X #6 has changed the game yet again. This series has reinvented the status quo of Marvel’s mutants while making everything that came before it matter while pushing us into a new, uncharted, direction. For those of you who are worried allow me to assure that there is no reset to the timeline here. Where House of X #6 ends is where X-Men #1 is going to pick up. This is what mutant life is now. Borderline immortal. A country on their own. And fighting to stay alive. Where does Moria fall into this? What about the future with the Phalanx? Is that really Charles Xavier? Some of these questions get answered here while others seem to loom even larger. All I know, that after a long time, I am overly excited for X-Men comics. I need this series pumped directly into my veins. We’re heading to something huge and I want to be there every step of the way.

Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity #1- Is it me or does it feel like there has been a lot of new takes on Harley Quinn’s origin story? Maybe this has something to do with the Birds of Prey movie coming out next year or maybe it’s because DC wants to be all in on Harley but Joker/Harley, coming out of the DC Black Label, really has my interest. It kind of feels like a Law and Order type procedural. Harley Quinn is a forensic psychiatrist working with the Gotham police department. When her roommate is killed by the serial killer Joker, Harley spends the next five years trying to track him down. Written by Kami Garcia with art from Mike Mayhew, Joker/Harley sounds like a unique take to this twisted “love” story. I like the idea of Harley trying to bring the Joker down opposed to being his lovesick pawn. This book has my interest…

Doctor Doom #1- D O O M ! It’s been a while since Doctor Doom had a book of his own and at the time he was more Iron Man then Doctor Doom. But Christopher Cantwell is here with a brand new ongoing solo series for the leader of Latveria and he’s brought Slvador Larroca along to do the artwork. Lucky us! This book sounds like it has a Captain America: Civil War vibe as Doom becomes hunted for a terrorist attack he may not have committed. Doom on the run…. yeah, I can get behind that. Throw in a little Kang the Conqueror and I’ll throw my adult dollars at this book without thinking twice.

Joker: Year of the Villain #1- Isn’t this convenient, a Joker solo title to coincide with the release of the Joker movie. That’s some pretty good marketing there DC. Bravo.  DC’s Year of the Villain is in full swing and I’ve enjoyed the majority of these one-shots. Especially the Sinestro one. It was only a matter of time before the Joker got his and while I may be suffering from Joker fatigue, this book has my attention for one reason and one reason only. It’s co-written by John Carpenter. You know, the guy who gave us The Thing and Halloween. Yeah, that John Carpenter. If there was ever a way to make the Joker scarier than this would be it. I’m willing to put my fatigue aside to peep what he has in store for the Clown Prince of Crime.

Event Leviathan #5– If you’re reading this issue to find out who Leviathan is then I’m sorry. You won’t find that out in this issue. I knoooow, it’s killing me too. On the other hand, this is the penultimate issue of Event Leviathan which means we’ll have to find out the identity in issue six. You would think, right? I don’t know about you guys but this event from Brian Michael Bendis, while captivating, hasn’t seemed like much of an event. It’s only carried over into one other book, and I love limited tie-ins but this book just seems very… quiet. Especially considering everything that is happening with the Batman Who Laughs and the multiverse and such. Maybe the final issue will blow the door off the greater DC Universe but that all depends on who is revealed to be Leviathan. Here’s hoping they stick the landing.

Honorable Mention- Black Hammer/Justice League #4

There you have it Geeklings, all the best books to get your mitts on this week. As always, if you feel like I left anything off this week’s Pull List be sure to let me know in the comments. If you’d like to continue our comic conversation then you can find me over on Twitter @iamgeek32. I’ll be there for the next two days talking about how I can’t wait for El Camino and probably a dash of X-Men as well. In the meantime, I’m going to be like Huell in Breaking Bad… just waiting. I’ll see you all here next week. Happy reading and many huzzahs!
