‘The Umbrella Academy’ adds non-comic characters

We heard a rumor… just kidding, we heard an announcement that The Umbrella Academy is adding some new faces to the season 2 list.

Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin H. Min will be back. Rita Arya (Humans), Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens) and Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man) will be joining them. These characters do not appear in the comics.

Arya will play Lila, a “chameleon” with a twisted sense of humor, being as brilliant or insane as needed. Gatewood will play Raymond, a warm, dedicated, and devoted husband who can disarm you with a look. Ireland will play Sissy, a no-nonsense Texas mom who married young for “all the wrong reasons” but ready to rediscover what life has to offer.

“We understand that it’s a different thing,” said writer Gerard Way. “This is its own beast that’s gonna run on its own legs and morph into its own thing. We’re going to focus a lot on the book and make that the best it can be, so they have good material.”

“The Umbrella Academy” is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way. It is illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Steve Blackman will return as showrunner and executive producer. Way and Bá are executive producing as well, alongside Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg.

In the first season, seven children with incredible powers and are adopted by an eccentric billionaire, who trains them to save the world. The six surviving siblings reunite after learning their father has died, only to find themselves fighting to stop the apocalypse.

Production on season 2 of The Umbrella Academy is currently underway. Season 1 is streaming on Netflix now.
